  • Washing Laundry in the Tub - Fun/Cheap/Economical!

My fiance and I have never been very good at keeping up with the laundry. This is probably because we live in a fairly small apartment without a washer or a dryer. There are washers and dryers available to us, but they are very small, and at 1.50 for 3 pairs of pants, and a few shirts...it just isn't worth it!!!

So, often times, we would only wash clothing in small amounts, only when we ran out of underwear/socks/etc. Not the most fun way of living. Especially when I have to make sure not to get anything on my pants because I might have to wear them for a long time before I can wash them again.

Recently, I started learning how to do things around the house for cheap. One of these things was laundry.

First, I made my "own" kind of laundry soap based on the research I have done online. I took one container of dollar-store OxyClean, and one bar of Dial antibacterial soap. I shredded the Dial with a handheld cheesegrater, and mixed it in with the OxyClean, and VOILA! Detergent. Cheap, antibacterial, detergent. Then, I started to fill the tub up with hot water, and added 2 tbsp of my concoction. Threw in some clothing (all the same-like colors) and let them soak overnight.

The next morning I woke up and checked on my clothing. Without any agitation, they were clean. But, being the clean freak I am, I decided to stomp (making wine with your feet style) around on my clothing for 10 minutes or so, to make sure they were "super-clean"

Then I rinsed them out in a bucket, wrung them out, and hung them on my shower bar (which I moved to the middle of my shower so that nothing dripped onto our floor)

I placed a very large floor fan in my bathroom door (in addition to having the bathroom fan on) and I am now just waiting for them to dry. I also started soaking another load in the tub to get grape-stomped later.

Also, you can use the soapy water to water your plants. It keeps away all pests. Way better than just throwing it out!

Would you consider washing clothes by hand to save money? What other options have you tried to cut costs?
