Notoriously classified as a vegetable by ex-president Ronald Reagan and reestablished a healthy choice by our relatively contemporary past head of country President George W. Bush, ketchup(-as-we-know-it-)'s days perched in the respected vegetable niche on the food pyramid (3-5 servings a day!) are numbered.
Here's now a salty slap in the face to these two revered gentleman.
Determined unfit for the esteemed vegetable position, instead of blasting their current ketchup recipe into the repelled "use sparingly" flabby peek of the food pyramid and then offering consumers a 'low sodium' version of their prized product in addition to their popular original, the Heinz company has announced that it will be completely obliterating its current recipe to make room for an improved heart healthier option.
The new recipe will reduce sodium content by about 15 percent and readjust "secret spices" to produce a product that will,
supposedly, taste exactly like the beloved original.
Clearly, I have my doubts.
Heinz currently holds 60% of the ketchup market. Apparently fans are super satisfied with its sodium-infused ketchup.
Therefore I ask: WHY? Why is this successful, high profile, well-versed, business oriented, customer approved company about to risk their hierarchical position on the ketchup-love-o-meter?
Heinz is the ketchup king. They certainly realize that this drastic change of salt could mean their loss of crown to...Hunt's? or the generic brand?
"From riches to rags, for the sake of salt" - I predict their future motto.
What do you think about Heinz's shift in recipe? Do you think the "improved" recipe will have negative bearings on the company's position of majority in the ketchup market? Will you continue buying Heinz ketchup?

I don't know! Years ago they made a low salt version of their ketchup and it was so gross ,it was a once and done kind of sale no one bought it twice on purpose. So the local store had a blowout sale for unsuspecting thrifty (Yes,I mean cheap) folks like my ma, seeing it was cheap she bought a years supply as did all the neighborhood mothers.
There was an epidemic of nasty ketchup in the hood.
It tasted do so bad even my mom did not like it,she even eats turnips, liver and sardines!
She finally broke down and used it for cooking and bought regular ketchup again. Some neighbor kids were not so lucky!
But.. The sodium makes it taste better. =[
Would they do this if they didn't think it could increase profits? No.
Not to worry - the mandate for maximum corporate profits will see to it that they won't wreck the recipe. They're more likely to just add a "low sodium" version to their product line. I think all the companies learned from the mishap of "New Coke".
For REDGOLD, All the way!
I like ketchup but I'm not that big a fan of heinz really...
I buy generic and use it for only 1 thing: beef jerky. (Its part of the marinade.)
And quite frankly, there are ways of making things taste just as good without all of the salt. The reason most companies just use the salt? Salt is a cheap way to amplify flavors. I make my own versions of things all of the time that taste almost identical with only a small fraction of the salt.
Im just glad that they are one of the few who make a HFCS free ketchup.
I know someone who puts ketchup on everything even cottage cheese and cheese cake! its super nasty! maybe she will stop with the new Heinz recipe. Well done Heinz!
@sarapsych - Agreed. Team Heinz!
Interesting. Ppl use ketchup to make something bland more tasteful. Those who are looking to lessen sodium intake should just eat less ketchup. Whats the purpose of putting less sodium if its going to cause ppl to eat more of it to make up for the blandness?.. oh wait, maybe that's what they're aiming for? Jk, I don't know, but what I do know is...
I'd prefer them to try and make a ketchup recipe that doesn't use high frutose corn syrup. There's a good and healthy business concept.

I only eat ketsup on my potatoe chips and I hate it on anything else yuck
Unbelievable. I don't eat ketchup. I think it's desgusting. Heinz ketchup, however, is tolerable on burgers and the occasional hot dog. It's the only ketchup that doesn't taste like watery tomato paste. If they really are getting rid of their recipie, it will surely be their downfall.
on weight watchers, an entire quarter cup of ketchup is only 1 point, which is way more ketchup than you need on your fries. it's already super healthy! Why make it even better at the risk of losing taste?
gonna go out and buy tons of ketchup before this happens.
catsup is for bloody mongoloids, y'see
ugh! when it comes down to it, it just wont taste as good. i hope they know what their getting into.
Right. We should all complain that the food we buy is too unhealthy, then when they try to change it, we should complain about that, too. Sounds logical to me!
Not to be remotely racist, but in general, why do white people put salt on their food even before tasting it?
but i love heinz ketchup ? why change ? I'm still down for the original one
The new hunt's "thicker and richer" formula is where it's at, anyway.
