Advice: I'm Starting to Hate My Job...Help!
It can be tough anytime you start hating your job, but it's even harder when the economy is struggling.
Over in Advice, too_pretty_to_die@xanga asks about what to do:
I currently work as an office manager in a very small company... only me and two other people, and one of them is the President. originally, I was told I'd be doing a lot of graphic and web design work (my main interest). Lately, however, that has only been about 10% of my daily responsibilities. I do mostly accounting, sales, data entry, and general clerical stuff.
Now... this job doesn't pay all that well. and I don't get any benefits or health insurance. The only real perks are that it's full-time, M-F 9-5, and the dress code is super relaxed. I'm starting to really dislike my job and wish that I was doing more of what I thought I was originally hired for. And over the last couple of weeks, I know it's begun affecting my job performance. Now, I'm worried about losing my job altogether before I can have anything else lined up.
This is a two-part question: is there a right way to ask my boss about this, so that maybe we could work something out? I brought it up to him once in a very informal way, and he seemed very apathetic. or, do you think it'd be worth it to really try looking for another job?
And, can you think of anything i could do to keep my job performance stellar? I've never really struggled with this kind of thing before... even when i had past jobs I didn't like, it never kept me from doing my job well. I figure that next week is something resembling a fresh start.
If you can help out, leave your advice on her Advice post!

it doesn't hurt to start sending out your resume and get some interviews lined up while you're still working at your current job, so that if you do land a job you like, you'll be ready to make the switch.
Definitely start looking for a new job. But remember, don't quit until you find a new job. How long have you been working there? If you've been there for awhile, it would be worth it to have a formal meeting with the manager. Explain to him why you think you deserve to do more graphic design work. Show him a portfolio of your best work. Explain to him why you're such a great aspect of his company.
I suggest reading a book called "Crucial Conversations: Tools for talking when stakes are high"
you can always request an 1 on 1 meeting, plan an agenda. the meeting could be as short as 30 minutes. you show initiative and all that good stuff because it shows you care about your career. also in the future, when it comes to review, you can always bring up various points from this potential meeting.
I'm in the same boat as you. I've hated my job since day one but due to my financial sitch with my boyfriend he won't let me up and quit and then look for a new job. So I'm looking for a new job whilst working there, even though every day there is painstakingly awful.
Is this something somewhat in your field? At least you got that going for you. I am working somewhere much lower on the career ladder than where I want to be. Something similar to fast-food and retail. Guh.
I used to have a job that I hated. At that time, I didn't need the money and having a job was a thing to keep me busy and help pay for college. Ony day, my friend pointed out that I was a bitchy person who complained about my work. After I quit, I felt a lot better and got more involved with college and did other stuff. So, I would say quit if not liking your job is affecting your outside life (if you can't work things out with your boss). Do that only if you can afford being unemployed.
