Weird Things People Freeze to Save Money
Keeping your freezer stocked full of food you're able to score on sale is a common way use their freezer to save money. But what about freezing other things to save some dough?
This recent post over at The Huffington Post has a list of some items the author keeps in the freezer to save money in one way or the other. There was a lot of new information for me in this post, and I might start adding some weird stuff to my freezer too! If you open his freezer you might see:
- Candles: Freezing your candles will help them burn longer.
- Batteries: While less true for alkaline batteries, freezing other types like NiMH and Nicad batteries can result in the batteries keeping a charge for much longer, possibly up to 90%!
- Wine Cubes: Turning leftover wine into wine cubes is a way to have small amounts on hand when you need to cook with it.
- Woodworm-infested items: The author has a souvenir mask in his freezer, but apparently if you put a wooden item in the freezer that have woodworms for a couple of weeks, the worms and all their eggs will die.
- Pantyhose: The author's wife swears that storing pantyhose in the freezer helps prevent runs.
I liked the idea of wine cubes and it's a nice way to cook with wine without having to open up a whole new bottle. The pantyhose thing may work, but I'm trying to imagine putting on ice-cold pantyhose! I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of keeping batteries around my food, unless maybe they were in some kind of container. The only weird thing you'll see in my kitchen is that I store my nicer nail polish in a separate compartment (away from the food) in the fridge because it keeps it from thickening up and getting gloppy.Oh, and sometimes I keep spoons in the freezer to put over my eyes when they need some de-puffing.
Have you ever heard of freezing these things? Have you heard of any other weird things you can freeze? Do you store anything in your freezer?

I've only heard about freezing batteries..not the others.
I've heard of freezing the candles, but the others.... And freezing the pantyhose, haha, that's funny! But i don't think it'll work though!
I don't think I've heard of any of these. I've heard you can put batteries in the fridge, but I've never heard you can put them in the freezer, too.
My aunt keeps her nail polish in the fridge...I don't know.
The only weird things we ever froze were pets. Haha.. not to save them, but we always had pets die when he ground was frozen for winter... so it sounds morbid, but we'd freeze them (we had a chest freezer in the shed, everything in it was in heavy duty boxes... so no, our hamsters weren't in the house freezer with the leftovers.. haha.eww).. anyway, we'd freeze them until the ground thawed so we could bury them. I don't do it now that I'm on my own... but if my son ever cares to bury a beloved pet, and we can't dig a hole.. .I'd freeze it.
@phantomblogger30@xanga - That's what they do at humane societies. When I used to volunteer at one I hated to have to go into that freezer cuz it was always full of dead cats and dogs.
what the? i had to click the original link to understand what a wine cube was.
I want to add a mini-fridge to my bathroom so I can store my makeups longer.
Bread can be stored the in the freezer to keep from molding, they keep for a good couple of months before catching freezer burn.
I remember my family members storing cigarrette cartons in the freezer to keep them from going stale - unsure if that actually works lol
I keep my natural organic bath products (that contains goats milk) in the fridge to keep from going bad. If you put face creme in the fridge it tightens ur pores and helps with bags
@phantomblogger30@xanga - yeah I had to freeze my parrot because the ground was frozen! eeeeek!!!
As for the batteries, it doesn't really make them last longer... it just slows the discharge rate if they're going to be sitting around before you use them. It's just simple chemistry that chemical reactions happen slower at lower temperatures. Now, if only we could have an absolute-zero freezer!
Also, I believe it is common practice to freeze skateboard & roller blade wheels, to make them more durable for later use.
My mom freezes everything. We put tomato sauce into ice cube trays so when we need a little we can use it for cooking without opening another can. This works for TONS of liquids. Chicken broth, pumpkin, etc.
Freezers are a gift from God.
Those are the strangest things ever.
i've heard of camera film put in the refrigerator...but this was about the freezer, and not too many people probably use regular film since there's digital cameras nowadays.
never heard of them!
the only things I freeze are food.
freeze camera film
i'd never heard of any of these... good to know.
I freeze pesto that I make with fresh basil. You can freeze them in little tupperware cups or in ice cube trays and transfer them to a plastic baggy. Makes for a quick fix later and it preserves longer than in a fridge. I also freeze chicken marinates in plastic bags to use for later when I want a quick fix. I should try the wine cubes idea but I always end up drinking all the wine, lol.

Why would you freeze camera film? I know that infrared film has to stay cold, but what advantage do you get from freezing regular film?
