Why Does "Fun" Cost So Much?
I waited 25 minutes in a virtual waiting room only to be told by Tickermaster.com that tickets to the Yankees-Red Sox game were $300 (plus tax, shipping and handling) a piece.
So much for crossing that off My Bucket List.
This the second time this month that my quest for Yanks-Sox tickets was ended by financial restrictions, You might remember my first attempt through Stub-Hub.com yielded similarly, if not more, costly results. You also might be asking why I haven't given up on this futile attempt to have some fun. I can tell you that it's because I can't believe that going to a baseball game really costs that much,
I was similarly shocked when the self-described "discount" broadway tickets site found me same-day rear mezzanine seats for $150 a pop. Seriously? How is it that "fun" is so freaking expensive?
I guess I thought that the recession would make having fun more affordable. You can buy 2-for-1 hot dogs. Shouldn't you be able spend less than a bill on some bad seats to a long-running broadway play? I haven't been to a concert in forever because it's such a financial commitment. I must be getting up there in age, remembering the good ole days when floor seats to a NKOTB concert only cost $60 per person. Now, tickets to see Lady Gaga cost the same amount of money as a plane ride to Vegas.
Planning a social event currently requires careful consideration and heavy weighing of priorities. You can't do something simply because you want to if it requires that you spend half of your rent money. Or, you can, but you're less likely to enjoy it. After all, how can a 4 hour event live up to $300 expectations?
Are you frustrated with the cost of entertainment? Have you been able to find legitimate deals on a good time?

I'm frustrated with things costing so much in general. I want to be able to afford plane tickets and hotel stays much easier to visit my girlfriend.
Supply and Demand
I guess you just have to alter your view of what "fun" is a little when going through tough financial times. Instead of an expensive concert try a free live music event at a coffee house. Instead of going to a high profile expensive sporting event, have people over to watch it on tv and spend a little bit of money providing snacks. Instead of Broadway, go see a show at a local community theater which are usually just as entertaining even if they aren't as glitzy. You get the idea.
I don't have a problem with the cost of entertainment. Some things are simply worth the experience and memories, and without them your life wouldn't be too memorable, would it?
watch the farm teams instead - that's what I do
not to mention it's easier to meet the players and make them scared of 5'3 asian girls (that's what I did, what a great night)
@Pcgecko85@xanga - Right! The main reason for this is because of the Theory of Supply and Demand. :D
One word: Inflation.
While the supply of money in the country has increased dramatically, the average income has not kept up at the same pace. In terms of real purchasing power, we're actually worse off than the 1950's.
Time to start having some FREE fun: dust off the ole board games or take a drive out to some park / beach and spend the day there.
