  • Why Does "Fun" Cost So Much?

    Why Does

I waited 25 minutes in a virtual waiting room only to be told by Tickermaster.com that tickets to the Yankees-Red Sox game were $300 (plus tax, shipping and handling) a piece.

So much for crossing that off My Bucket List.

This the second time this month that my quest for Yanks-Sox tickets was ended by financial restrictions,  You might remember my first attempt through Stub-Hub.com yielded similarly, if not more, costly results. You also might be asking why I haven't given up on this futile attempt to have some fun.  I can tell you that it's because I can't believe that going to a baseball game really costs that much,

I was similarly shocked when the self-described "discount" broadway tickets site found me same-day rear mezzanine seats for $150 a pop.  Seriously?  How is it that "fun" is so freaking expensive?

I guess I thought that the recession would make having fun more affordable.  You can buy 2-for-1 hot dogs.  Shouldn't you be able spend less than a bill on some bad seats to a long-running broadway play?  I haven't been to a concert in forever because it's such a financial commitment.  I must be getting up there in age, remembering the good ole days when floor seats to a NKOTB concert only cost $60 per person.  Now, tickets to see Lady Gaga cost the same amount of money as a plane ride to Vegas.

Planning a social event currently requires careful consideration and heavy weighing of priorities.  You can't do something simply because you want to if it requires that you spend half of your rent money.  Or, you can, but you're less likely to enjoy it.  After all, how can a 4 hour event live up to $300 expectations?

Are you frustrated with the cost of entertainment?  Have you been able to find legitimate deals on a good time?
