  • Did You Consider These Expenses When Planning Your Vacation?

Did You Consider This When Planning Your Vacation?

There are lots of ways to discount your travel plans.  Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity will get your a cheap room.  Credit cards, such as American Express or TruBlue can pay for your flight.  And there are restaurants in every city offering Pre-Fixe menus.

But what about everything else?  We spend so much time and energy getting cheap rooms and plane tickets, we often forget the things that can stealthily (and steadily) drive up our travel expenses.  Here's a list of what I always forget when budgeting my vacatons:

    • Wardrobe:  This is especially true if you are travelling from someplace cold to someplace hot.  Or vice versa.  Trips to the tropics mean you need a new bathing suit (or two); trips to the slopes mean boots and a ski jacket (to say the least.)  And no matter how often you travel, you will always want to do so in style so last season's parka and/or hotpants probably aren't going to make it into your suitcase.  I always, rather unwittingly, spend $200-$300 on clothes and accessories (you need sunglasses for Mexico!) when I am getting ready to go away.  And that's before I get my hair and nails done.  And go tanning.  Which brings up ....
    • Toiletries:  Travelling with open bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash is not practical (especially if you invested in a new set of luggage.)  And I don't think anyone brings along a used toothbrush.  If you have to also buy sunscreen, aloe or chapstick, you're easily spending $40-$50 at Duane Reade.
    • Cab fare:  Most people are pretty good about getting discounts on the travel to-and-from their destination.  But what happens when you get there?  If you can afford to rent a car, I suppose this is a manageable expense.  But I often spends tons of money on cabfare when I get to my vacation spot.  Especially if I used a discount travel site.  They don't always give you the best idea of where you hotel is in relation to, well, everything else.  When I went to Miami the first time, we made the mistake of staying in North Beach.  Our hotel was beautiful, but nowhere near the hot clubs or popular beaches.  Which meant we taking $60 cab rides all over Florida.  I'm sure there were cheaper methods of transportation.  But when you're on vacation, you don't exactly wanting to be waiting around for the bus.
    • Souvenirs:  I budget for this, but never accurately.  Who knew Mexico had such wonderful silver?  Or that I needed that tattoo ...

Do you agree about these extra expenses?  Have they snuck up on you?  Are there other things you find yourself spending too much money on when you travel?

um... no offense, but you're crazy.  i bring along whatever toiletries i'm already using (yes, even used toothbrushes), i don't buy a new swimsuit JUST for vacation, i do at-home manicures and pedicures all the time anyway...and souvenirs are an absolute waste.  the trip should be memorable enough alone, without needing to buy objects.  just take photos of every little thing.

and why on earth would you go tanning BEFORE vacation?  isn't that what you're going to be spending most of your time doing?

@too_pretty_to_die@xanga I agree with everything you said.... seriously. No offense, but this is crazy.

-stick your open shampoo and crap in a ziplock bag! if it messes, it's contained.

-why on earth do you need a new wardrobe before vacation? chances are, unless you live in an area where the weather doesn't ever change, you'll have suitable clothes to wear.

-if cab rides are looking at $60 a pop, just go rent the cheapest car you can get. if you shop around you can find places that will rent to you for around that much a day. and you can go wherever you want in it.

-souvenirs... easy. JUST don't BUY them. goodness.

This is kind of a crazy list.

I bring full bottles of shampoo and such.. in a ziploc bag.  And unless you're traveling internationally, I guarantee you there will be a Walmart or at least a drugstore nearby.
If cab fare was so expensive, why didn't you do the smart thing and RENT A CAR?  We're going to Florida soon (mostly to visit family, but it's a vacation for us too) and opted to rent a car as part of our flight/hotel package.
Who buys a new wardrobe just for vacation? A new swimsuit... well, that I can see, but who says you have to spend hundreds on one? You can go to Old Navy, Target, etc. and get one for a reasonable price.

ok I agree all of that is really weird...depending on how long I will be gone I take my shampoo in a trail container you can easily get at walmart of a buck and can reuse..as far as goign some where warm from some place cold I live in MN We do have summer it is not always freezing here so I do have things I can wear in a warm climate...and depending on where you are staying most hotels offer courtesy shuttle service to most touristy areas I know when we were in Denver the Hilton Doubletree arranged to drop us and pick us up a a particular restaurant with their shuttle as there was 4 of us going.....and I know when my parents went on a cruise with a group of their friends since there where 8 couples they rented a limo for the 2 days that they were in port before they boarded the ship and the 2 days after the disimbarcked to shuttle them around and when split 8 ways ended up being cheaper then renting a car or van....

I can get behind you on the cabfare thing, but good god woman, you can't wear last years jacket to a ski trip? That is absolutely ridiculous. I actually live in a tropical vacation spot and do you know how many swimsuits I own? One. And I bought it at walmart.

    Priorites much?

P.S. You're smacking down fourty to fifty bucks on aloe, chapstick and sunblock? That's almost half my grocery bill!

Yeah I agree with everyone else.
You don't need new clothes for a week long vacation where no one knows you unless your swimsuit is falling apart and doesn't fit or your coat has no filling anymore.
Most hotels in America offer complementary shampoo/conditioner, soap, and lotion. Mexico I don't know about but the cheapo ones at Walmart, target, Walgreens ect work great and then you can just put your shampoo in them later. Not to mention its the perfect time to finally use up all of those annoying little body wash sets that people give you for Christmas when they can't think of anything else. I mean.....no I love that 3 oz lavender body wash and lotion set you got me Aunt Betty....
Cab fare can actually be taken care of pretty easily. RESEARCH! Instead of trying to find out what the best rout and how to get somewhere right as you get off the plane, look up where your hotel is and the surrounding area on google map or something. Now you know where your going (so you don't have to wander Miami till its 60 bucks) and you know the restaurants close by, how far to the destinations and you can figure out what other transportation there is. (For example a subway)
Souvenirs is easy too. Like you said set a budget but now STICK TO IT. Setting a budget is no good if your going to abandon it on a whim when you see something you like. I make this easy by getting small things that help me remember the places and I can collect. Key chains anywhere I go I can find them cheep they represent where i was and I can get a number of them on one trip. Other people get shot glasses, or those little spoons. I'm not saying you can't get other stuff too, but don't go crazy about it.
No offense but to me it just sounds like you have  trouble with panning and spending.
