Over lunch the other day, I was debating with two other colleagues whether people ought to play dirty to move up the corporate ladder or to keep their job (given current climate in the finance industry).
There are two main camps of thoughts out there. One being, "of course, we should because office politics is part of work and career advancement"! The other being, "no way, as long as I do my work well, I will not need to resort to this."
Which camp are you in?

I personally hate this type of thing and would not want to be in such a work environment. I guess in some places you have to do it in order to advance but is it really worth it in the end? While competition is healthy, cutting people down is not only bad for morale, but I would think that it would lower productivity because everyone would be working against each other instead of towards a common goal.
when you first said "play dirty" i thought u meant sleeping with the boss to get ahead.
office politics is a whole other thing. that's unavoidable. few places would promote someone is good but not liked. you have to be liked in addition to your abilities. i hate it but it's reality.
I know someone who's slept her way to the top and kudos to her because the big boss looks DISGUSTING and she was able to do it.
I on the other hand, never mastered the brown nosing technic which explains why I'm still making chump change... =(
I wouldn't do it at the expense of others, but if I'm helping them land big accounts, then yes, I want a bigger piece of the pie. Even though I'm just a designer, being aquainted with the business side of things helps a lot.
@Kat - can't agree with you more! healthy competition can only be constructive till a certain point. beyond which, energy/time/talents that could be used for the business get squandered in these games..
@Liera@xanga - hahhaha. so, my next question to you would be: "would you sleep your way up?" ;)
good point there. i have seen too many cases whereby guy A(very good and respected in his job but network in the firm is limited to the circle of people he works with) gets stuck at staff level while guy B(average in his job but has extremely good relationship with the management) gets promoted to management level. c'est la vie!
@Utoppia@datingish - whoa!! well, let's just hope that that big boss hangs in there long enough. cuz once he's gone, off she goes as well. ;)
i know what you mean.. sometimes it's either be part of the game or be nothing literally..
@FireYourBoss@xanga - i always have a lot of respect for "specialists" of a certain field who are acquainted with the business side of things but people like that are in such rare supply! you deserve your fair cut of the pie and i hope the other designers by watching you, will be motivated to understand the business side too!
nah, gotta be others way to move up
