  • Amazon Cuts Affiliates to Avoid Charging Sales Tax

Colorado has recently passed a new law to collect sales tax on online purchases. Though technically the new law doesn't strictly require paying sales tax to Amazon, that's essentially the result. The other option is for retailers to track customers' spending and send them statements of their total spent so the customer can pay the sales tax directly to the state.

Rather than go this route, Amazon repeated what it did with affiliates in Rhode Island and North Carolina when those states passed similar laws. They chose to terminate the business relationships rather than be responsible for sales tax. If they stayed with their Colorado affiliates, Amazon could be forced to turn over the customer statements to the state as part of the state's enforcement of the new law. The sales tax law would affect Amazon customers around the country because the taxes are levied against products shipping from the affected affiliates. So if your product came out of Colorado, you would have to pay the Colorado sales tax, no matter where you lived.

Apparently lawmakers predicted this very thing and it figured into their debates when considering the law. Many predicted that Amazon, which has about 4,200 affiliates connected to it, would rather leave than be responsible for sales taxes. Most of these businesses, which rely on Amazon to some degree should be fine,  but smaller businesses that get a large part of their revenue from the mega-shopping site may be hurt by this move.

Do you support Amazon's move? Or would you rather they retained their affiliates and charged sales tax where necessary?

I love Amazon & I've been a faithful shopper for almost a decade. I'm glad they're trying to support their customers rather than just go with the flow.

Good for Amazon for bucking the tax trend.

They should implement new code on their website to comply with the new tax laws.  It's unfair to the small businesses who rely (almost) entirely on them.  In a down economy, few people can afford to be put out of work and not suffer.

Im glad Amazon isnt doing to the dark side. ^.^ Why dont people blame the small business not getting any action on Sams Club or other places like that. Whatever people can manage to find on the internet should be fair game.lol. Amazon is probably the reason why I can afford my baby.... I can buy a months worth of diapers by getting a big box at Amazon for $35.99 and then just a small package at walmart for $7.65. It saved me last night when I had literally only 5 diapers left and I ordered the box at 8pm... the UPS people got it to me by 6pm the next day?! That is why I will forever shop with them if I need anything. They also save me from paying full price on college books... $400 worth of book for $225. WTF?!lol. Sorry but I know taxes would just ruine everything. It just takes the convenience out of internet shoping. I might as well travel to Texas myself to get the package.lol. Soooooooooooooooo ya. I <3 Amazon.com !!!

I'm glad they are not going to charge sales tax.  But as far as diapers go, I get mine cheaper at Costco than they are on amazon.
