Serendipity and Where's George: Do You Write on Money?
The other day I was at the store and the cashier paused over a $5 bill and asked if I'd ever follow it. Confused, I looked and saw that there was a website written on the bill that was something like "see where I've been" to track the different people who've had the bill. There's a really common site called Where's George that does something of the same thing. They tend to advertise on money and then on the site you can enter serial numbers off your bills and see where they've been.
And then another bill I got today had someone's name written on it, I assume because they wanted to see if the bill ever got back to them. It reminds me a little bit of the movie Serendipity, where one of the characters writes their contact information on some money and then spends it, leaving it up to chance that they'd find each other again.
I may be especially cynical, but I don't think I'd ever visit a website written on money. My first thought is that it would be some site chock full of spyware, which I know is silly, but I'm a little paranoid like that. And something in me that likes to be contrary refuses to visit a site like that just because that's exactly what the person wants. I know it doesn't make any sense, but it's just a thing I have. My boyfriend is the complete opposite: he's always curious and will go to any website he sees, whether it's on dollar bills or stickers.
Have you ever written anything on money? Would you follow a website link written on a bill?

I hate to admit that I have been to wheresgeorge many times, but I am addicted to that website :) I even bought a stamp to make it easier when adding more bills to my list! :)
I have followed the website, but will not write on money. It feels wrong somehow.
I'm with you on the whole not visiting the site just to be contrary, thing. ^_^ Besides, who cares where George is? Really, I could never see a point.
I get into WheresGeorge a couple times a year. I find it interesting for a while then forget all about it.
Oh, <guilty> yeah did, not website but, my mobile number. :P
I never do Where's George but I do write quotes and things on dollars.
I've never written on, stamped on or marked on money. Likewise, I've never purposely torn or ripped money. Defacing federal money is a federal offense. :p Its not likely that I would ever get arrested for it, but why break the law just because nobody would ever really do anything about it, despite laws being on the books about it?
I would also not go to a website written on money, mostly because I'd figure it would be designed to give me a virus so the jerk who wrote on the money could laugh about all the people getting viruses because they were dumb enough to go to the link. :p
I also wouldn't contact anyone who's name and contact information was written on money, because I'd be afraid they were some kind of nut or serial killer, so there's MY bit of strange paranoia. :p
