  • Forget Costco — Buy in Bulk at Target

Target is encroaching on bulk warehouse territory for its new Great Save Event, which is going on now and runs through February 21.

During the event, the store will be selling bulk items (toilet paper and such) in the seasonal aisles of all of its stores, as well as offering discounts on non-bulk products, from bedding to iPods to video games and DVDs.

But Target's jaunt into 60-million packs of Brawny is not a permanent shift for the company, WalletPop reports. The chain announced it is not moving toward carrying year-round bargains in bulk—the powers that be aren't even sure whether they'll do this again in 2011.

Buying in bulk sounds great and all, but WalletPop warns that consumers often get reeled into spending more on items they don't need when they know they're getting a good deal on essential purchases. In other words, will all that discount toilet paper make up for some CD-related splurging?

I like buying bulk quantities of items I use often that don't expire (at least not for a while), like paper towels and soda. I've had to cut back on bulk purchases, however, since moving into my apartment—there's just no place to put it all.
Do you buy in bulk? How do you keep from splurging on other items while you're shopping?
