CNN
reported yesterday on a new survey about relationships among coworkers. After polling 8,000 people, CareerBuilder found that 40 percent of responders had engaged in an office romance, and 31 percent of said 40 percent had turned that cubicle fling into full-on matrimony. Which means, of course, that 9 percent did not.
The article lists some pros and cons of office dating. Under pros, it's easier to do pre-date reconnaissance at the office than, say, a bar. You can tell by desk photos and casual conversation whether somebody is married, divorced, a parent, etc. (It seems unlikely that a coworker would lie to
everyone at work about stuff like that.)
Then again, if you date and break up with a coworker, you're stuck seeing them all the time. A good compromise might be to stick to dating people outside of your immediate area—people from a different department, shift, whatever, so things won't get awkward after the romance fizzles.
Have you ever dated a coworker? Are you surprised to see that 31 percent of those who did wound up hitched?

Yes, I would be surprised that the marriage rate was that high. I have never had an office romance it just sounds too complicated for me.
Yes, I'm living with him now. =]
I married the only person I ever worked with and dated! Guess that makes me part of the 31%!
All office romances I've seen in real life have ended horribly.
The only one I've seen that worked was the "Jim & Pam" relationship of The Office.
I met my husband at work and we started dating. We both quit and got different jobs, and then worked together again and have for years now and it's no problem at all. So nope, not surprised about the number!
Mine didn't work out, but it wasn't a big deal. It wasn't an amicable breakup- I was furious with him, but our jobs didn't involve me talking to him, so I just never spoke to him.
@crazygrampastuey@xanga - hahaha. i think they kind of turned into jerks after they started dating though. i miss my shaggy-haired slacker jim!
I think that office relationships are horrible, because if you break up, then you're going to have to see that person EVERY WORKING DAY for the rest of the time that you spend with that job.
What's wrong dating with a colleague if she's fun and attractive?
no Ive never dated a co worker, but I have wanted too
@Athlyx@xanga - Same for me, and it's great!
Something like that... we didn't work together, but we kind of do (hard to explain). It was just kind of awkward all around. I prefer to keep professional stuff seperate from personal stuff, so seeing him on a day to day basis in professional type manner was strange, and then when we broke up, it was just that much harder to get over it because I had to see him EVERY DAY.
I honestly only clicked on this entry because I thought there would be a picture of Jim and Pam from The Office...hahahaha.
My coworkers dated for a while, and then they broke up...one ended up quitting, and then they got back together, and the one that quit is out of a job. I guess it could go either way...it's successful or it's not. They're happier now that they don't work together [because she was his boss, and he couldn't deal with it], but still. Some people don't have a problem with it. It all depends!I have never dated a co worker, probably because I have never stayed in one company for to long, all jobs have been temporary at the start but did not get took on at the company.
I have never had a relationship with anyone anywhere
Worked at many jobs, seen a lot of office romances, never did any of them end well. Usually with the end result being one person leaving the company. I think the poll they used was tainted heh.
It is easy to meet someone at work, good if you are too busy to find someone in other places. If you break up, you are both in big trouble. He/She knows intimate stuff about you that could get spread around the workplace, especially if there are bad feelings. Also, it is probably against company rules.
well it depends what postion this person is in, or what one you're in. if it's threating your carrer i would'nt do it. but hey, to each their own.
Guilty! I've dated a coworker. We were so in love at one point. Coworkers, being the gossipping mess they were, began to speculate on personal matters. "It looks like she gave him some this morning" when he was in a good mood. And there were rumors that he was my bitch. C'mon...get some class. JEEZ.
It didn't end well. He became so spiteful after the breakup that he took the job I wanted! Bastard. Then, he kept trying to get back with me like nothing happened. What a nightmare! He was one of the driving forces for me to leave the company.
I dated someone who not only worked with me but was on the same project team as me (7/200 people in the company were on the team). I do regret it in that it made things very hard for me after we broke up but I also don't regret it because she was the only person I've been in real, consummate love with so far.
@tsh44@xanga - The 31% of coworkers getting married may seem really high but if you think about it people working together are going to have more requirements before going on a date so the compatibility is going to be much higher from the beginning.
@lauralois@xanga - Most companies simply do not allow people to date their superiors.
Lol @ "and 31 percent of said 40 percent had turned that cubicle fling into
full-on matrimony. Which means, of course, that 9 percent did not." Don't mean to interrupt this discussion of romance, but 31% of 40% would leave 69% of 40%, not 9%. Unless you meant 31/40, in which case that could have been said more clearly. This is a classic SAT question, and I've been studying for that lately. So yup. Kthxbye.
i never dated a co-worker before, but was close to setting up a date after many flirts.. but he got his ass fired for stealing, and well so much for that idea :P
I think I'm not surprised about office romances.. you see each other so often, and you talk to them regularly.. with a casual flirts here and there, and well.. it happens. As long as you can keep the whole dont mix business with pleasure thing, then, well, what's stopping you?
@heaventtonight@xanga - It does make more sense when you put it that way.
