This question comes from one of our readers:
I was recently offered a position at a company, and I'm having trouble negotiating a starting salary. If I ask for too much, I might make a bad impression on my future employer, or, worse, blow the whole thing. But if I ask for too little, I'm worried I'll wind up resenting the job and feeling like my work isn't being appreciated. In this economy, it's tempting to cling to any offer I can get, but then again I know the recession has made the potential for raises and promotions less likely, so in a way getting a good salary is more important than ever. How do I find the right number—and discuss it with my future boss? Should I use a website or ask my friends in the field?Want advice from Dollarish?

First, do some research by checking the salary range for your position through salary.com or some other career info website (or book). If you have knowledge of how much you should be getting paid, negotiations will be much easier.
