  • Stop Re-releasing Albums!

Sometimes, I wonder if the major music industry enjoys jerking our hard-earned cash from our pockets or if they are simple or slow, when it comes to the power of music industry economics. By this, I mean, the terms of releasing an album.

Earlier, I went to listen to a new album, only to find that The Fray has re-released their second album with bonus versions of this and past songs and a DVD of their videos. Their album was released months ago this year. I saw this happening in the past with albums from Beyoncé, Chris Brown, Björk and Taylor Swift.

The question I have is: what person with any grip on economics is going to buy the same album twice? Who in their right mind, knowing that they have the albums already on the charts, is going to go out of their way, and sell the regular version they have for the album that has more bonus tracks and maybe a deluxe sticker for your lunchbox?

Haven't they learned anything from the independent industry? If you feel that an album is not finished, then don't release it till it is finished. Otherwise, the best way not to cheat your fans or casual listeners is to release an EP. Sure, an EP is only $5.99 (depending on the purpose of the EP and the amount of songs on the album), and you won't get too much from it, but what do you care about more? Money from the people you hypnotize on the radio to hear your music?

That's why so many people go to independents. They know when an album is finished, and if there are other songs left over, all they can do is release a new album, or release a new EP. You have new videos? Release a DVD. You have some remixes? Throw it on an EP. Heck, if you have to make two or three versions of the same album, release it on the same day, so we all can get a choice. But artists, please don't re-release an album, forcing us to put our old one in the bin, and get the new one.

Those who make greatest hits albums, this goes for you, too. If an artist already made a greatest hits album, either make a volume two of the greatest hits instead or let people buy the one that is out.

Have you seen this happen with artists? Wouldn't you like to see these people quit that in the future?

I hope they dont stop. You have to remember not all music is on CDs so alot of music that is rereleased on CD is a high priority for some people. Also, out of print CDs that become available again...I have a list. lol. Like when Michael Jackson died, his music shot up the charts & a lot of people who have his music have it on records & tapes so they wanted CDs & digital downloads before they go away completely.

I DO agree on rereleasing CDs they just made. If you have new songs, just make a new CDs. Personally for me if you're under 30, you're too young to have a Greatest Hits collection. Like Hilary Duff. I like her music but she has a greatest hits CD after like what...3 albums or something? That's too new.

Re-releases, especially in the age of the Internet, really do seem very pointless. If I want a song that's only available on a re-release of an album I already have, guess what I'm going to do? Hint: Not buy the re-release. Use Internet. Obtain desired song through questionable means if legal means are not available. Repeat as necessary.

This is why man invented bittorrent.  If you can get into the private tracking site what.cd you are good to go.  They have every CD in any format you want.  I prefer mp3 variable 0 (v0)

The week's over, so The Fray's album is probably gone anyway. But there ill be another re-released album soon. Don't worry.

One time I went crazy and downloaded a bunch of albums from Amazon only to realize some are almost exact duplicates!  I was sooo pissed!

I hate it when you buy a cd, then they rerelease it with bonus hits that you can't purchase on itunes unless you download and pay for the whole cd. Its so unfair!

any way to make money, it'll never stop. I wish they would stop making crap.

Does it matter? Most people already load from limewire or bittorrent or  emule, etc...

It's the greedy record companies that do this. They're trying to make up for the fact that fewer people are buying cds. So what they're doing is punishing those who DO buy cds by making them buy multiple copies of the same cd. It's actually pretty evil. The only ways to stop this awful practice is 1) people have to boycott the rereleased cds, and/or 2) the artists themselves have to take a stand and tell they record companies that they cannot rerelease their cds.
