  • Abortions Keep Planned Parenthood Afloat

TheTheologiansCafe@xanga had a very thought-provoking post on Tuesday about Planned Parenthood and abortion. Several news sources (mostly conservative) have reported on a former Planned Parenthood clinic director from Texas, who recently switched from pro-choice to pro-life after witnessing an abortion. She has since left Planned Parenthood, and made a couple of controversial remarks about how the organization actually makes most of its money from abortion procedures—as opposed to its less controversial and more preventative measures, such as educational outreach programs.

    From Fox News:

"Every meeting that we had was, 'We don't have enough money, we don't have enough money — we've got to keep these abortions coming.'"

    From The Houston Chronicle:

"Definitely the most lucrative part of their business was abortions," she said. "One of the things that kept coming up was how family planning services were really dragging down the budget, and family planning services include education about contraceptives. It was a drain on the budget, but abortion services were really running up the budget and that was keeping the center afloat."

I'm extremely pro-choice, but even I get squeamish looking at abortion as a business rather than what I believe it should be—a last resort. I think it's unfortunate that education, which is so important in preventing unwanted pregnancies, isn't more "lucrative."

Are you surprised that Planned Parenthood relies on abortions for money? How do you feel considering the business side of such a delicate issue?

    Corportations aren't trustworthy.. that's all.

I find a $40 Plan B at my local Vons much more cost-effective than a $300 abortion up north where the only Planned Parenthood is.

  • schallerbrandon@xanga

Surprised, indeed. Also, I am quite depressed that they would have to rely on such methods rather than public funding for contraceptive measures, family planning, and the other services which it provides. The conservative attack on the issue is partially angering because it is not limited to abortion, but also contraception and family planning. Ever since the days of Margaret Sanger, the Roman Catholic Church (and therefore, conservatives, perhaps) have been rebelling against the progress in society establishing methods of birth control. We must fight to protect these measures, and these gains, for the freedom of women.

  • sarahzthoughts@xanga

No, not surprised at all. If that's truly the case, then they should stop handing out condoms and the morning after pill if they want more people to get abortions. They should also start supporting abstinence-only education programs to increase the likelihood of young people having unplanned and unprotected sex. All for a good cause of course, all for a good cause.

I always just thought this was common sense.

You know, this is why I'm anti-modern medicine. It's greed like this and abortion is no different...greedy physicians (and apparently greedy PP) set everything up.

I'm 100% pro-choice 100% of the time, but this is bad. Just like the rest of the modern medical scam, this has been turned into big business. Gotta love the greed of the medical industry and those who support it.
  • whitetrashpoet@xanga

It's interesting, seeing as how only 3% of PP's funding goes to abortions. Even if that is how they make their money...they use the money earned to do really wonderful things for local communities.

    @AcrossTheRaspberryGalaxy@xanga - me too...

When you have vulnerable women who have convinced themselves this is their choice, someone's gonna make money off of them.

    Isn't Planned Parenthood a non-profit organization?

  • xsimplepleasuresx@xanga

abortions subsidize the other service they offer.  In any other business, those other services would probably have been eliminated for efficiency reasons and abortions would have been promoted to increase the bottom line, which provides an indicator of planned parenthood's view on the importance of education and contraceptives.  A surgery procedure such as abortion will always have a higher price tag than educational programs and contraceptives, simple rules of supply and demand explain that quite well.

  • beauty_is__thin@xanga
Of course they make their money on abortions! An abortion can range form $300-600!!!! They need to make money somehow to stay afloat. The government only provides them with minimal funding. Every planned parenthood receives different funding depending on the area they are located.

    1. i don't trust fox news.
    2. i find nothing wrong with abortion, even as a business.

  • soobee72@xanga

So in other words the money made from abortions funds the family planning and contraceptives and all the other expenses?

Watch the film: Maafa21 it is totally documented and exposes more about Planned Parenthood. Sneak Peek here: www.maafa21.com

first off, an obligatory fuck fox news.

Secondly, who cares, abortions are legal.  My gf has gotten birth control and all kinds of preventative stuff FREE from PP.  They are a great organization.  If abortions allow them to keep preventative measure free then it's all good.

  • salvatruca_stalking_havok13@xanga

First, why are we trusting Fox News? Second, how do we know this former clinic director isn't lying about this? Lastly, I don't care as long as PP keeps doing what it's doing. We need people that actually care about women's health.

  • juliesally100@xanga

@schallerbrandon@xanga - On the contrary, the Catholic church is the only institition trying to protect women.  When the Pill became widely available in 1965, three things were expected: 1) better marriages 2) fewer abortions and 3) a better, healthier culture overall.

By 1975, just ten years later, the divorce rate doubled from 25% to 50%.  Between 1973 (the year of Roe) and 1995, the annual number of abortions doubled.  Then there's rampant pornography, sexually saturated movies, TV shows, and music... hardly an improved, healthier culture.

All three expectations fell horribly flat.  Yet somehow, from the very beginning, the Catholic church wasn't fooled.  They knew the false promises wouldn't pull through.  Funny how that works.

  • LoveYouToDeath16@xanga

I'm not surprised. As long as they don't start pushing people into abortions quickly before trying to first talk to woman into keeping it or giving it up for adoption. Now that is just crossing the line... but hey, some people like me who are pro-choice like the idea of the option being there when we  need it. I just don't want to feel like I would be literally selling my soul to the devil.

  • xsimplepleasuresx@xanga

@juliesally100@xanga - Until you can prove causation, all you have shown is correlation.

  • schallerbrandon@xanga

@juliesally100@xanga - @xsimplepleasuresx@xanga - Indeed, the Catholic church does maintain much secretive knowledge. I mean, they "predicted the effects of the birth control", but could not ascertain that the earth revolved around the sun until the early 1990s. Perhaps the Catholic Church is right.. perhaps the Earth is the center of the universe, and we should all donate our money to the continuation of the church.

    C'mon over

Im ani abortion as it's a new life begining and those moments after must be great remorse as you killed your baby ! I know what it's like to loose a child and it ain't nice !

  • futilityofdelight@xanga

They wouldn't have a bussiness of murder if people were more responsible. I'm pro-choice in the way that I believe you can open or close your legs. THAT was your choice. Once decisions are made, consequences are consequences, and adoption is an option.

  • juliesally100@xanga

@schallerbrandon@xanga - Cute way of dodging the fact that contraception has ruined our culture.  Keep on sticking your head in the sand.

  • explosive@xanga

I think it's naive to think abortions AREN'T their main source of revenue. And I'm fine with that.
