  • Save Money On Your Heating Bill!

Here are somethings I have read about how to save money on the heating bill in winter. Do you use any of them or have any to add?

Minimize your use of ventilation fans such as bathroom fans and kitchen hood fans in winter. A bathroom fan can suck all the heated air out of the average house in little more than an hour. Over the course of the winter, ventilation fans can increase your heating costs by a surprising amount. Kitchen exhaust fan covers can keep air from leaking in when the exhaust fan is not in use. The covers typically attach via magnets for ease of replacement.

    • Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter
    • Wear warm layered clothing indoors during cold weather. If you live in a cold climate and can comfortably walk around in a tank top and shorts - you're wasting money!
    • Use rugs on bare floors.
    • Wear more clothes.
    • Sweats are warmer to wear than jeans.
    • While sitting at the TV or computer, cover up with a comforter.
    • Make sure all windows are closed tight. Lock them to be sure, a window that is open if even a tiny bit usually will not lock.

Do what you have to do. Right now it is so cold and windy, I have a blanket tacked up over a door that currently feels like ice. The blanket is stopping some of that cold air. May be ugly, but its working.

How do you save money in the winter when it is cold out? Any tips on keeping your heating bill low?

Space heaters! I use them every winter, and the electricity to run them is always cheaper than turning on gas heat.
We also tack heavy blankets over the windows. At our old house the seal on the windows was terrible so we put plastic over them to insulate - looked kinda tacky but really helped!

My mom is Asian, so we rarely turn on the heater. xD We layer clothes like no other.

We have been slowly making improvements to the house that really help with the heating bill.  Some were more expensive - like replacing the windows (although it did make a HUGE difference).  The cheapest one was probably putting new insulation in the attic.  It was only about $100 for the insulation.  It has easily saved us much more than that since we put it in 3 years ago.

Even though we replaced the windows, we still keep the curtains closed over the windows as an extra layer of insulation.

Where ever possible make sure nothing is blocking the heating vents (or registers, or whatever you have).  That way the warm air is able to circulate into the room and the entire room will warm faster!

I am glad I am not the only one who thinks in the winter you can sit on the couch with a blanket!  If you are up and moving around/working, it is plenty warm.  If you are cold sitting on the couch, there are plenty of blankets in the house!

We live in a old mobile home and we have put insulation over the windows and then thick plastic over that...there are a few spaces left unblocked so that we can see outside.  We also put blankets over the windows instead of thin curtains.  It's ugly as all get out, but I can't afford a high gas bill.

@libertyisfreedom@xanga - nice to know I am not the only one with blankets over windows

We have always heated our home to 62 for many years.  Last winter, with the high cost of propane, we dropped it even further to 58.  It really wasn't much different.  Slightly cooler (and yes we could tell) but nothing another afgan wrapped around couldn't ward off.  And, surprisingly, none of us ever got sick last winter.  We are planning the same thing this year.  It is Nov 10 and we haven't turned on our heat yet!  One problem is my husband is bald and his head gets very cold in the house.  He wears a stocking cap most of the time but when he sleeps it falls off and his head gets cold.
