The wholesale giant Costco is planning to accept food stamps nationally some time near Thanksgiving. Some stores on the East Coast have already been accepting food stamps, however the idea was only targeted in New York City.
The use of food stamps began when the wholesale chain began testing in the New York's Queens and Brooklyn. However, that changed when CEO Jim Sinegal, said that times are changing and the new concept can help a lot of those who need it now.
Before the expansion of the food stamp usage, the company still needs to identify products that are eligible for stamps. Costco is working with food-stamp administrators, beginning in hard-hit areas like Michigan and the central valley of California.

Nice! I love Costco!
We're in a recession, so I believe that there are a little more people on government aid.
Oh, it's perfect for Octomom.
I think its a great idea.
finally.
that's understandable, especially in these hard economic times
this is an excellent idea!
Just because you are poor should not mean you get free or discounted food. WORK HARDER! Don't be lazy and don't make your race look bad.
Sounds like a plan. Costco is my fave--I'll take it over Sam's Club anyday!
And they still have those killer Polish sausages with sauerkraut and a drink for only $1.50! Mmm.
I don't think this is a bad idea at all. But would that mean membership would be free or discounted to those who were financially burdened? ... the memberships aren't exactly the cheapest.
I love Costco! I met Jim Sinegal before, he visited the Costco I was working at back in 05 and I mustered up the courage to go say hi to him. He was the sweetest man! I wish I took a picture with him. I was so excited when I was approved for their american express card.. it's the only store based card that I was determined to get no matter what. I succeeded:)
@Shopgirl0393@xanga - haha so true!!!! It's like, "I can understand if a hot dog was buck fifty, but A HOTDOG AND A BIG ASS DRINK for $1.50"
pack the kids and come on over, it's lunch/dinner. I can where the food stamps might go into use... (btw, Sam's Club rocks with the ice cream, Costco does better Pizza)
@ChOcOChObO@xanga - Yeah Sam's ice cream is AWESOME!!!
I love the idea of food stamps @ costco's, but like an above poster I wonder what they will do for memberships?
Still, great idea. <3
It is because Sam's Club started accepting food stamps two months ago.
@LoveMeDeux@xanga - i know a woman that works three jobs and still needs food stamps. she does not live beyond her means, she just does not make enough money.
what an ignorant comment.
and "don't make your race look bad?"
what the hell is that supposed to mean.
@bodyheartmindsoul@xanga - yeah, i agree with you. her comment was so inappropriate. my step mother used to be on food stamps and she worked many jobs. times are hard.
@LoveMeDeux@xanga - Thats extremely rude. If it wasn't for food stamps me and plenty of other people wouldn't be able to eat, they don't just hand it out you actually do have to be someone who is working or trying to. Not even going to comment on the rest of your post, your just ignorant.
@LoveMeDeux@xanga - You're making yourself look bad.
I love Costco! I think it's a good idea, but I'm not sure that you can get the most for your money at Costco since most items are name brand. Also those who are struggling a bit financially need to worry more about getting a variety of foods in their diet and I don't think that buying 5 pounds of bread at a time or 3 pounds of chex mix is necessarily the best way to meet their nutritional needs.
Good gesture, but not sure how much it will really help.
@lovezpassion@xanga - Good point about the membership. Maybe they'll give out a 1 free pass?
