  • "Hi, I lost my wallet..."

This past weekend I was at CVS pharmacy when I lost my wallet. I had about 10 items in my hands and I put it down for  a second on the shelf, then COMPLETELY forgot about it when I went to grab a basket. I was with my boyfriend at the time, and less than 10 minutes later I looked up at him with a terrified look and said "OH NO". We both ran back to the aisle I was in when I set it down only to find it missing.

No one in CVS turned it in. The next morning I got a call saying they found it in the parking lot, but it was missing the $100 I had in it. I cried the entire weekend about this one. Not just because I am short $100, but because 60 of those dollars my grandma gave me, and the other 40 my brother gave me!

I was disgusted with the heartlessness of the thief. I am a poor college student, this was a huge loss, and I rarely ever carry money for this reason. I immediately thought of the Dollarish post "Hi, I lost $20..." Never in a million years would I have taken someones cash and then dumped their wallet!

    Guess I've learned my lesson.

Has this ever happened to you? Is it still safe to carry cash or not?

I'm sorry for your loss. :( It happened to me a long time ago, and now I keep my wallet close.

  • i_r_keiko@xanga

It's safe to carry cash, just not to lose it!

  • crazygrampastuey@xanga

On the bright side, at least you got your wallet back (with your IDs & credit cards?)

  • SoullFire@xanga

You have to look at it as a mixed blessing. It's bad that someone stole your money instead of turning in the wallet to lost and found.....

But if you had all your other info returned like your drivers license, bank, and credit cards, then that's really good since the inconvenience of getting those items replaced along with the big threat of identity theft could have been FAR WORSE than the loss of $100.

I lost a hundred dollars  once in an airport when I was highly stressed by  life circumstances and needed the money badly.
Theft is always a personal assault , especially of a wallet because its such an intimate representation of you  from your ID , to your check book  to the  little notes you write yourself.
This may sound weird to say now but I have learned to feel a tangible amount of pity along with anger  towards  people who  steal from others..It seems a life  led by someone who can callously hurt people , or a life driven by drugs ,which ever  it is is a life made smaller and one in which a lot of energy goes into denial ( of the basics of moral behavior ,or some other challenging truth ) You may have lost your money and its cry worthy but you have something the thief will not have unless he or she faces down some hard truths.I would not trade my self respect for money ,ever. You have that too and its something no one can take from you.
Oh I have since learned to keep anything over what I can afford to lose   inside a sock ( I wear clean socks mind you ) unless I know I am not going to be multitasking.  I have ADHD and routinely lose things.. I plan what I want to buy  put items in my cart ,and then when I  am ready to pay I go in a restroom ,slip of my shoe and take out the cash. .I also check for my credit card every time I leave the store so that if it ever gets lifted I can report it immediately,, I keep no copy of my bank card pin or social on my person and shred ,rather then toss documents with such info on them should  discard them..Hugs for the hurt caused by who ever took your dollars.

PS Monitor your accounts for identity theft since the thief might not want to tip you off and he/she  may have copied  the numbers although I doubt  it was anything other then an opportunistic  thief at work

I keep my cash in my pockets ALL THE TIME. That way, even if my bag is stolen, my cash is still safe in my jeans.

  • Sun_Starflower@xanga

I keep about $10 in my wallet when I go out with friends. If I need more, I can "pretend to pick up my fork", and get more money from my shoes. Once in high school gym, I left my backpack out with 50 other girls. When we were exercising and outside, some guy or possibly girl ransacked through everyone's backpack and got away with my cell phone and wallet. :/ They took everything and even used my cell phone to text their friends (when I didn't have a texting plan). Highly stressful and it bothered me for months. :x

I never carry over $100 in cash. Ever.
Shot, I never even carry more then $40 in cash unless I'm coming back from the bank.
I'm super paranoid of losing money because I'm kind of careless. I tend to forget things in silly places.

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

$100 isn't so bad. It's a bigger time waster to replace all your cards.  Plus they could have easily drained your cards at gas stations.

  • PerpetuaLMondaY@xanga

@Miashineonnnn@xanga - I agree! I had the same epiphany. Sounds like you have a good strategy.

@Shy___Away@xanga - I do that too sometimes, but then I figure it might fall out of my pocket! =[

@Sun_Starflower@xanga - Ugh... yeah that is so awful!

Sometimes I carry cash on me if it's no more than 60 in my wallet but it's a rare occasion that money goes in there. I seem to forget it even exists in my wallet so I just shove the cash into my pocket.

  • Duhiana@xanga

Hm, not 100 dollars, but recently someone stole my black canon camera. Sigh. it was worth more than any money value :( , how messed up people can be these days.

  • lot223@xanga

man this is one of the main reasons why i usually use the card. even a visa isn't as bad these days because they insure all your purchases and if someone uses it, you can get your money back after a 3 week investigation.

  • I_once_was@xanga

yep, people are indeed heartless- set asside 400 to get into a doctore and my drugs (insulin and such) at full non-insurance costs...andsurprise surprise my money went poof thanks to the house theiveswho of course knew nothing nor cared... I ended up in the hospital...the cheater spent the largess on ??  funny although I'll never truly now where it went- Its weird that while that's rent its just not the 10k that frees a person to be drugged and hoteled  and fed without worry nearly every and money for friends/enterage or hookers.

  • tigerdauphin@xanga

I find it amusing that ppl think if they turn in a purse/wallet w/ the cash still remaining inside to some "figure of authority" that the loser would get all the cash back.

Who says the "figure of authority" won't just take the cash and return everything else?

Would I have kept the money if I found cash lying on the floor?  Yes.
Would I have kept the money if I found cash inside a wallet/purse?  No.

But then I would make sure they get it back myself instead of giving it to someone else.
    Sorry for your lost.

  • babykittytara@xanga

Shopping 101: Don't carry your wallet in your hand, dumbass.  I'd feel sorry for you, but if you had your wallet in your hand (which you would have had to to be setting it down on a shelf) and you didn't think to pick the damn thing back up, you kinda had it coming.  Maybe next time you'll learn to carry a purse or keep your wallet in your pocket, where it belongs.

  • Ganjina@xanga

Omg I work at a club and this kind of stuff ALWAYS happens. People leave things in the bathroom or other places and then people take them. Usually they dump the purses someplace and take everything in it. I've only came across 3 people that have came up to me saying that they fond someones purse or camera or phone the whole time I've been working there. People are stupid, I'm sorry you lost that money. I'll find its way back to you though :] Don't worreh.

  • babykittytara@xanga

@Ganjina@xanga - That wasn't really rude - it could have been a lot worse.  But anyone who's out shopping, especially a college student who's been around for at least 18 years and should know this kind of thing by now, does not deserve any kind of sympathy or pity for losing their wallet because of their own stupidity.  If someone had stolen it out of their bag or pocket, I would have been nicer and sympathetic.  But she had it IN HER HAND and set it down and left it.  It was her own fault, so if my comment was rude, so be it.  Maybe one rude comment will drive the point home that she did something stupid and paid the consequences for it.

  • x501@xanga

    disgusting, indeed :(

  • Ganjina@xanga

@babykittytara@xanga - I understand that, she should have known better than to be so careless especially with that much money in her wallet, I'm pretty sure she realizes that now. But you didn't have to call her a dumbass. There's other ways you can get the point across to people.

  • babykittytara@xanga

@Ganjina@xanga - You're right, I didn't have to call her a dumbass.  I chose to call her a dumbass.  There are other ways to get the point across, but I didn't chose to use them, now did I?  If you don't agree with my wording, well, too bad, because I really don't care.  I'm not going to soften up my comment just to avoid offending someone.

  • cheesecakeloverk@xanga

@babykittytara@xanga - Then don't get offended at my comment saying you're a heartless bitch.  =]  How do you know it wasn't a one time thing?  She made a small mistake, big deal?  Too bad she can't be perfect like you are, right?  haha, right...cuz God totally broke the mold when he made you.  *rolls eyes*

Anyway, I always carry my wallet in my hand, because usually (specially in CVS) I know what I want, and I run in, grab it, and I don't have to dig around through my makeup and everything else I have in my purse.  My wallet's bigger, so it can get away with being a clutch.  I've never left it anywhere, but if I did I rarely carry more than 5 dollars in it because I don't use cash.

Sorry for your loss, but how did you pay without your wallet?
