  • Finding Jobs Online — How Do You Do It?

It seems the days of red-penning the classifieds are behind us—every time I look for work, my search starts with www and ends with dot-com.

A blogger over at tzurin.net had an interesting post about One Day, One Job, a website that features a new entry-level job every day, ideal for recent grads. There's also One Day, One Internship, a sister site for those of us still in college. The One Day, One Job site also offers a variety of interesting articles, like "How to Use Google to Find a Job."

I've had my biggest job-hunting successes via Craigslist. I always feel confident reading the entries, since I know that employers posted them personally—and recently—and the open format allows them to provide as much or as little information as they want. The only problems I've encountered are the occasional telecommuting jobs, which show up under all local pages even though there's nothing local about them.

Internship-wise, I found a great one once by stumbling upon a list of journalism internships throughout the country. (It was a couple of years ago, but I believe I discovered the site through some creative Googling and a page on a college's career center.)

I'm usually turned off by career sites like Careerbuilder.com, which feature lists of industries to choose from—food service, entry-level, sales—but they always seem to either overlap or miss what I'm looking for entirely. And then lots of retailers offer online applications (Borders, Macy's, etc.), but these take up a lot of time and the companies rarely get back to me, probably because the apps are always up and don't necessarily mean that a particular location is hiring.

Do you look for jobs online? Which sites have you found the most and least helpful?

    Same here, not much luck.

Craigslist, for sure. I found three jobs & applied to each of them, had interviews but was not chosen. You just have to know what to look for and make sure it's not a scam.

i dislike online apps, they are usually the most random and annoying questions. Plus it takes forever and a day to do it.

I find CareerBuilder annoying.  I like WashingtonPost and Craigslist, but for me knowing someone within the organization has usually worked best.  Sometimes recruiters help, as I am in a specialized service-oriented industry.

Niche job sites work the best. I found both of mine through AdGrad.org, a social network for UT adv/pr students/staff/alumni. :)

*sigh* the story of my life.

craigslist is great, but be careful when you apply to jobs.  do your research beforehand on the company and such before you apply to ensure it's not a scam, esp. if it sounds too good to be true.

i also suggest recent college grads (like myself) to definitely look into job programs/internships that pretty much offer a guaranteed job afterwards; esp. those that are geared towards recent grads.

at the end of the day, you have to continously apply for jobs and hope for a lead, interview etc.  and like they said above, networking is extremely important.  it won't necessarily mean you'll get a job, but someone could help link you to a job opening you would've never known about.  for example, i found out about a program through someone, who suggested i apply for it.  if i never knew about the program, i would've never got in (PRAISE JESUS!).

good luck to everyone, keep a positive attitude.

I wish there was a button on job sites that would just remove all the nationwide garbage, but maybe they'd lose money because the nationwide garbage posters would make posts anymore.
