  • Would You Ask For A Raise Now?

I was surprised at first, but I'm seeing more and more articles around the internet that encourage worker to attempt renegotiating their salaries. My initial instinct is that, given the present situation, many people would be happy to have a job at all, and that it seems too risky to push it.

This is the very premise that these articles, such as this one on Mint.com, attempt to counter. In the Mint article, for example, the authors argue that the fear of being fired for asking for a raise is irrational. Instead, they say that asking for the raise will garner you respect from your bosses, making you less likely to be fired. While people may not get fired simply for asking for a raise, I can't help but find the assertion that it'll make you BETTER off a little dubious.

The proponents of renegotiation here say that the key is asking for the raise correctly, which includes being confident. They suggest considering your monetary value, avoiding emotions and imagining your "impossible" number. Additionally, they recommend keeping the following factors in mind:

    1. Goals met
    2. Responsibilities filled
    3. Projects completed successfully
    4. Problems solved
    5. Experience gained
    6. Expectations exceeded
    7. Positive feedback and praise from colleagues and clients
    8. Innovative ideas
    9. Successes of your group or department

Furthermore, they recommend asking for a a raise every 12-18 months and to prepare fore rejection, having retorts ready for the negative responses.

It may be the way this particular article is written, but I can't quite get behind this idea. While I'm all for making sure you aren't being under-valued, this seems a little overly aggressive. I don't know if I'm just more risk-averse than I should be, but I certainly can't imagine waltzing in and asking for a raise right now.

What do you think? Is it a good idea to ask for a raise right now?
