  • Holiday Shopping… Already?!

If you’re on a tight budget like me, I’d suggest shopping for holiday presents early.

When I say early… I mean months ago.

Some people may think it is a ridiculous idea to be shopping to early; however, many stores are clearing out their stock to make way for the holiday season. I found in September and this month is the best way to shop for holidays because children are going back to school and much of the autumn stock needs to be gone before the holiday season inventory arrive to the store.

Reasons why shopping early have its advantages:

    Lots of discounts:
The middle to the end of each month, consumers should have signs of clearance or ‘extra savings’ for clothing stores and specialty stores such as Yankee Candle.  They have sales and lots of discounts because they want to get rid of the previous season's inventory. Many online stores discount items up to 90%, but be warned, they usually can get you through the shipping and handling.

For online shopping, free shipping and handling:
Usually when there is new stock, stores will offer free shipping and handling. Why? Because most of the new items are still in its original price, so the stores give you shipping and handling. Under these conditions, stores will have you buy over a certain amount before you can get that free offer. Plus, it takes longer to ship it to your address. Sometimes, stores offer free shipping to the store itself.

No fights during the holiday shopping season:
The last thing you really need is fight over items with crazy people. Save yourself from the headache (and the injuries) buy shopping early or online.

You can get items before it is marketed to the public:
Some items can be inexpensive before companies market out products. Such as electronics, you can also pre-order them before they get sold out in the holidays.

You’re in less debt when you shop in small intervals:
Many people go overboard shopping last minute that they don’t even know how much they spend. I find myself being more relaxed and thinking more clearly when I shop ahead of time.

You can enjoy doing other things when everyone else is shopping!
I did this last year and it was such a relief not to worry for last minute shoppers.

    Your disadvantages:

You won’t get all the deals you want until after you shopped:
Sometimes the stuff you bought might have gone down on price especially when the store is trying to get rid of old inventory. However, DO save your receipts. Some stores will give you a price adjustment.  However, most online stores will not allow you do this, but you never know, ask them.

    The shipping and handling…:
You might have gotten what you wanted, but the shipping and handling just wasn’t worth it. You bought a $100 lightweight t-shirt you have to pay $15 for shipping. That’s just ridiculous!

I decide to donate money in the names of my gift recipients this year =)
It's a good cause! And it will save me time and trips to the shopping mall. =D

I start holiday shopping immediately after the holidays - like boxing day of the previous year, I'm talking. I get most of it done over the summer. I ask people for their lists in April (actually, May, but April is when some people actually have some answers for me), shop some in June and July and pick up bits and pieces along the way to Christmas. Nice way to stay on top of birthdays too.

I try and go by a theme every year. Last year, it was delicious smelling bodywash. This year, it's something from The Hunger/Animal Rescue/Breast Cancer/Literacy/Rainforest/Child Health website so all the proceeds of those gifts, even though they cost a bit much in duty fees, go towards the aforementioned causes.

K-Mart has layaway! I'm definitely taking advantage of that this year. Everyone is getting something from K-Mart. lol. Does anyone know of any other stores that have layaway?

It's easier for some to do it right after Halloween, but I tend to do it last minute, cause i never decide what to get people. And if you do it too soon, something might come out someone you know might have liked better than what you got them earlier on.

Make a list of ideas of things to get for people.  That way you have plenty of time to shop around for the best price on items!

I always try to have my shopping done before Thanksgiving.  When I do?  I spend way less because there is no last minute rush!  The 'sales' of the Christmas season are often after significant markups!

@AcrossTheRaspberryGalaxy@xanga - be careful with layaway.  There are fees associated with it.  You will probably do better to just buy 1 item at a time and not pay the layaway fees.

Good thought. I've been thinking of shopping early but it doesn't happen because of other events like birthdays, anniversaries and baby showers :(

But hopefully it'll work out in the end haha, good points though :)

I buy all my gifts after Christmas for the following year, the price drops in January are amazing.  Of course then I have to store them til next December.

I do my shopping beforehand too. I'm 20, in college, only working part time so if I do it al in one month its VERY overwhelming. I also don't have to fight in line :)

Wow, you've made a lot of good points. I thought that the holiday sales would be cheaper, but it's true that if you space it all out instead of spend all at once, then you don't drown yourself in debt.

I'm usually done before Thanksgiving. I may make a few final gift purchases on Black Friday.

I am a third of the way done now. I try to get everything bought before Thanksgiving. The truth is those so called "deals" are after they have raised the prices and then give you 20% off which makes the price the same as it would have been if you have bought it on Nov. 1.  Sure there are some good deals, but are you really willing to fight the crowds for it. Not me. Peace of mind is what my Christmas season is all about.

I work for UPS and we've been shipping Christmas materials since June. I personally don't do any shopping until the week of Christmas, if not on Christmas Eve. Online shopping is so much easier. Everything I want, you can get online.
