  • What Do You Splurge On?

In response to the recent post Is Being Cheap Worth it?, a lot of answers came back along the lines of "it depends." It seems like, generally, few people only buy cheap things or only buy expensive things. Instead, most try to balance out when it's worth it to spend money. People acknowledged that sometimes you need to buy more expensive items if they are going to take a beating or really need to last. But we also know somethings just aren't worth the investment for a quality item.

We've talked about cheap items a lot before, but what do you splurge on? What items are worth the investment to you?

Appliances, especially washers and dryers.  I will buy a used microwave, though.

The most expensive thing I've ever bought was underwear...it sounds weird but I just got sucked in by all the pretty colours and decided feeling pretty was worth spending about 2 months of my salary.

Pretty much everything I don't need.

    Electronics, I drool over them.

Electronics. My laptop and iPod (touch) were slightly unnecessary, but I wanted them so bad.

    Otherwise, I splurge on makeup.

I dont think buying something higher quality that costs a bit more is really a splurge.  A splurge is spending 2 months salary on underwear!

skincare products, as long as they work! I usually try before I buy and Sephora is awesome with returns so there isn't any risk involved.

    Also, electronics.

    shoes and handbags...i love them.

I tend to splurg on the gifts I buy for the children in my family, I know that the items can be expensive, but I want them to have the same luxuries I experienced as a child.  As for me, I tend to splurg on the occasional steak from the local meat market, and sometimes electronics if I will use it enough.

I used to splurge on fast food.  But now it's cold coffee beverages.  My favorite of those being Java Monsters; most flavors.

Food! I want healthy, organic food. I'd rather spend all my money on wholesome food than buying expensive clothes.

    Books, coffee, movies, cds.

Hobby-related items such as rubberstamps and other craft store goodies.  Also a good mocha-on-the-go is a little extra splurge for myself once in awhile.

@the_imperfect@xanga - me, too - good, wholesome food, organic if I can afford it. We spend waaaay too much money on food in our household. But at least it's healthy food, not junk food (that's my excuse anyway...).

Also, I occasionally splurge on animal-friendly, environment-friendly make-up and face cream... I like Weleda (the smell is gorgeous) and the Body Shop. I replace the few make-up items I use about once a year (more often for mascara - don't want to get eye infections!)

I don't spend much money on clothes, but I dare say I do dress well despite my limited funds. I'm an avid sales rack shopper, and know what looks good on my body.

I splurge on good shoes - I have pelvic separation and need good support if I'm to be in (almost) no pain.

I spend more on quality items that last longer and less on items that are just used for a little while (children's clothes, trendy items that may not be so trendy two years from now). It's all about the CPW (Cost Per Wear)!

I insist on quality in most everything I have, eat, wear, and do. However, I still insist on saving money, and lots of it! My hint for luxurious living: buy second-hand. SO many people have hang-ups about this, but why, I don't know. I mean, I don't buy second-hand for gift giving; a gift has to be new in box or new with tags, but that doesn't mean I won't buy it on ebay or overstock! As for myself, almost my entire wardrobe has come second-hand, but you wouln't know it; besides, we don't keep the tags on our clothes once we start wearing them, so I guess I kind of have the same philosophy as one might have in buying a used car; once you drive a car off the lot, it ceases to be "new," anyway...

I love luxury; in fact, designer clothing, shoes, and most of all, HANDBAGS, are my "thing." My coworkers marvel at the things I wear; they always ask how I can afford them. Usually, it's ebay, craigslist, overstock, or TJ Maxx, or from shopping clubs like Gilt, ideeli, hautelook, gomatta girls, etc., but ebay and craigslist have the best deals. Case in point: Marc Jacobs bag (not Marc by Marc Jacobs; Marc Jacobs!) for $60. New with tags Juicy Couture daydreamer for $40. Tory Burch Reva flats for $40, new with tags Rebecca Minkoff bag for $55, Stella McCartney bag for $80...it's not just clothes. I have bought a brand new stainless steel range for $160, because it had a minor scratch on it, and an $8,000 Baker sofa for $350, because the owner decided she didn't like the custom upholstery, after all...I also get GOOD make-up on sale, by shopping at online sample sales. I recently bought $300 worth of Lorac cosmetics, my favorite brand at Sephora, for only $50 in an online sample sale! I also have Restoration Hardware lamps, Pottery Barn coffee and end tables, and Crate and Barrel bookshelves, which I bought off of craigslist for $400 for EVERYTHING. And my plasma tv was from CL for $125, so my entire designer living room came in at well under $1,000!

If I can fill my closet with designer labels for less than what some people pay to buy from Target, or the like, then why not have my cake, and eat it, too?

Oooooh, I know. Every paycheck I get, I set aside at least 20 bucks of splurge money for myself. I blow it on Godiva, shoes, movies, or assorted junk like cheap jewelry. I am willing to drop big bucks for purses tho.... I have a problem with big name handbags, but I want a L.A.M.B bag next so I won't buy any handbags any time soon. I'll probably get a haircut and some new make up with my next check.
