  • A Fun Day- On A Budget!

We took a trip to Salvation Army, which was, surprisingly, open on Labor Day (that's today folks). We made a deal that each of us would have an “allowance” of 3.50 to play around with. Davey (my SO) didn’t find anything. I think that's a double negative, but I am going to continue anyway. I found the following: 2 French onion soup bowls with handles for the oven, 1 Tae-Bo tape (I love Tae-bo), and 1 tea pitcher with strainer (nice, glass, has the metal strainer device so you don’t have to use teabags).  I’m giving to Nici and Mike because its cute and pink, which she will like, and Mike drinks tea/coffee, so I am sure he will like it.

My total: $3.23. Yep, that's right. Under the amount I wanted to spend, and I got these two beautiful, black onion soup bowls. I don’t know what else to call them. They are made out of clay or some heavy dense material and are glazed with this black glaze. They look amazing. I found some online for 30.00 each. I got them for… I believe 2.00 for the set.

     Here is the tea-strainer-thingy:

The bowls startedonion soup thing with me. So, we stopped off at the store, and with Davey’s leftover money, we purchased a bag of onions and some beef broth. We had a ton of bread because of the bread sale last week at Pick’N’Save, so I chopped it up, and threw it in the oven with garlic salt. There are my croutons! Made homemade pizza this week, so I had leftover Mozzarella cheese. There’s my cheese!

To make the soup, I caramelized the onions to almost the point of no return. Mixed a bit of beef broth in with them to lift the bits off the bottom, and then dumped the whole thing into a huge pot. Cooked it for twenty more minutes, and ladled it into the dishes. I quickly tried to add the croutons, cheese, and throw it into the oven, but the croutons just fell in and got mushy. I need to find a different way to do this. Instead, we just made some toast and dipped it.

Davey’s friend Ben came over, and he wanted soup too! So, I ladled them both up a bowl. Apparently, I put in WAAAY too much cheese, and they had an extremely hard time eating it :)

So that's how we had a great day while spending less than $7!

How do you have fun on a budget?
