What's the difference between wealthy and rich?
I've always wondered what the difference was between "wealthy" and "rich", or if there even is a difference.
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, here are their definitions:Wealth - 1 : having wealth : very affluentRich - 1 : having abundant possessions and especially material wealthBut what do you think? Is there a difference between rich and wealthy? Who would you qualify as rich? As wealthy?

rich; having 8 different cars. 3 of the same only in different colors. (my friend actually has this.. :[ shitload of money) ridiculously huge house that's way to big for you and your family. spending money on useless things like $4,500 bags, $1,000 boots, $350 sunglasses, $250 jeans (usually things this expensive all in one outfit.) does not settle for anything below the finest of material.
wealthy; being able to enjoy life in nicer then middle class, but not as high as high high class ways. having money to do what you want when you want. living comfortably. nice home. have things that you like, but are still at a reasonable price.
Wealthy is buying a boat, rich is buying a yacht.
I say the words are interchangeable. If I said Bill Gates or Warren Buffet were rich or wealthy, no one would be confused as to what I meant.
rich= having material possessions
wealth= being content with what you have
Chris Rock explains it pretty well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDkCE7WqxOE
When I was in HS someone actually asked our law teacher this question and she said that being rich you have to work for your money, being wealthy is just sitting around all day and the money comes to you =/ don't know how true that is but I never really stopped to think about it
That's exactly what I thought of, Lupa! Ahaha.
this may just be me, but whenever the term "rich" is used it's most likely in a negative way because that person is arrogant and throws money away and flaunts it around whereas someone labeled as "wealthy" is seen as a smart, modest spender with a lot of money.
Thanks for the entry. I was confused too.
A wealthy person does not have to worry about everyday bills and can indulge themselves mostly without thought to cost whereas some desires may take planning. Whereas, a rich person does not have to consider finances at all under normal circumstances.
there is a difference. but not in the sense you are thinking.
rich.. is just a crude term. wealthy is the proper term for someone with abundant money. how do i know this?
i am extremely wealthy. my family even has connections with the vanderbuilts. and we see people who say 'wow, so you must be rich' as somewhat crude. so to answer the question, rich became a slang term long ago, derived from 'riches' such as gold and other such finery. there is actually little difference. but i advice you to use the word wealthy. because when someone says it to us.. it comes off as we are just a sterio type.
WEll...... I believe that rich means that you have plenty or have good quality posessions. To me wealthy means that you are well in life, or that your life is well. This is a great question! Very philosophical!
i think rich is material-wise while wealthy is just like enjoying life a little bit above middle class.
I think that wealth is a much more versitile word and can apply to many aspects of a persons life. I also think for me wealth is a more long term thing. My family is from the south and we are a wealthy family. We have old money and property. Rich to me is more oh well I kind of fell into this, sounds like some one with a lot of gaudy jewelry who drives a car with an excess of chrome.
you should see the Chris Rock special he gives various examples on what is rich and what is wealth
Shaq is rich
Donald Trump is wealthy
I think it means the same thing but is used by people in different ways..Like there are families that have roots in "old" money and families that are considered rich/wealthy but only are categorized as such because they gained that wealth in shady ways...For ex: someone born into the Kennedy family or the Warren Buffet family will always be rich/wealthy because they have the family background/business to their name...whereas someone who just got rich/wealthy from winning the Lottery, or becoming the next Britney Spears or major entertainer - will be considered "nouveau riche" because that person may not have class or a wealthy upbringing, but can stll flash their bling in society. There is definitely a distinction amongst social circles about how the wealth was acquired and the label "rich" or "wealthy" doesn't really answer that question because they are virtually synonymous.
hm, I think you're thinking too much for the sake of thinking!
Rich can be used as an adjective. Rich flavor, Rich taste, rich nation, etc. Or it can be as a noun and be a word that can easily substitute for the word wealthy.
It is easily to say "Rob the rich." instead of steal from the wealthy, but the meaning is still the same. I think also people like to become wealthy or become rich, no difference and very little nuance. Add the adjective super to either word that would make little difference but you can be the richest but wealthy can't show degrees of how wealthy.
To conclude who cares? I am content and don't have to be richer. However some people like the term wealthy, especially when it refers to their family....
rich bitch or wealthy bitch?
wealth is overall better than being rich. as someone already said, one have enough money to last forever, while the other have enough money to last just their life time. holler back.
i would think wealthy would be for blue blooded type people. Money thats been in the family for generations.
Rich, would be the newer people with money.
i think you're rich if you earned it, and you're wealthy if it's inherited.
I think rich is really describes a person that is really rich
if wealthy, maybe he is not a really rich guy, but he is very nice, always help each others, always help those person that is really need to help, and he is very happy to do that, then it is wealthy for him..
I thought being rich.. meant that you earned money.. And being wealthy.. was being born with money.
Something like that.
I thought rich was having this extensive amount of money that accumulates to atleast a million.
Wealthy is being considered well of financially with a decent income of $100,000 and up.
Rich and wealthy can also be considered a lifestyle from my opinion.
