  • Is Now The Time For A Raise? 10 Tips Getting A Raise Now

Most the most part, people are just glad to have a job at all these days. But what if you've been working particularly hard and think that maybe, just maybe, you deserve a pay raise? CNN made a list of 10 tips on how to get a pay raise during the recession.

According to CNN, if you want that pay bump you should:

    1. Research- Know what the market rate is for your job

    2. Justify the pay raise- Show them you've gone beyond your job requirements.

    3. Work smarter with the goals of management in line- You want to look like the worker that's the best fit for the company.

    4. Make all of your daily actions in line with the company's goals- If they want to cut costs, work on that, if they need clients, work on client interaction.

    5. Realize that there are some companies still giving raises, even during the downturn.

    6. Sell the raise as a win-win to your boss- Show them the benefits of giving you a raise.

    7. Ask nicely- Don't forget your basic manners!

    8. Take into how in-demand your job is- With certain industries still going strong, some jobs will give you a leg up.

    9. Threaten to leave if you don't get the raise- WARNING! Only do this if you're prepared to follow through!

    10. Realize that you might not have a right to a job- Unless it's in your contract, keep in mind that they don't actually owe you the raise.

Check out the article here; http://edition.cnn.com/2009/BUSINESS/09/03/pay.rise.recession/index.html

I don't know what I think about this list really. It just seems too gutsy to try to demand a pay raise when so many people are looking for a job. I wonder what kind of mindset you would need to think you're entitled to a raise right now. Plus, the list of tips seems like it's full of a lot of filler.

What do you think? Would you ever ask for a raise in an economic downturn? What do you think of these tips?

    I work at mcdonalds.
A kid I work with shows up late for almost every single one of his shifts. he has been written up 4 times and always calls in.
He's getting a paise raise because he is friends with a kid who is friends with the manager, and because he practically beg for it.
Meanwhile, i work my ass of, doing other peoples jobs as well as my own, show up to work on time and only call in if absolutely necessary, and i get what? NOTHING.
    This world sucks.

I wish I would have read this when I asked for a raise last week. I did follow numbers 2 and 3 though.
