Internet Surfing Increases Productivity at Work!
Apparently, all that time you spend on the internet at work is good thing after all. A study at the University of Melbourne focusing on productivity and the internet have found that that '...Workers that who engage in ‘Workplace Internet Leisure Browsing’ (WILB) are more productive than those who don’t."
It points out that firms and companies spend a lot of time and energy blocking sites likeYouTube and Facebook to keep up productivity of their workers may be doing the opposite. They studied 300 workers and found that 70% of the workers engage in WILB. Of these workers, those who spend a reasonable amount of time surfing are 9% more productive than their counterparts. So the catch is you can't waste all of your time trolling the internet, but under 20% of your total office time is alright.
The researchers attribute their findings to our imperfect concentration. Apparently, to concentrate effectively, people need to be able to zone out a bit. So as long as you don't take it so far that you're addicted, you're actually doing your company a favor.

Do you browse the internet at work? How long do you usually spend doing it?

I totally agree.
My work is at home and on the internet....so yes, yes I do.
I like this. A Lot!
Probably 2 hours minimum, maximum 8 hours at work keke
I don't have computer/net access at work, but when I'm in class, after I get a few minutes of blogging, networking, and YouTubing in, I'm more driven to do work because I'm already satisfied. I don't feel restricted or weighed down by anything they won't let me do and I work better at my own pace anyway.
I believe it. I was in a seminar and they gave us pipe cleaners, playdoh, and koosh balls to play with and I actually felt much more engaged and aware. It's funny how that works out.
There was a bit of a debacle at my workplace regarding internet usage by some of the staff. This article was released the following day. I've never seen my boss eat his words so quickly.
Boo-yah for distraction!
Cheers,
Taylor
Wow- I am shocked at this finding! As a business productivity consultant, I see surfing the net during a workday as a complete distraction to getting "real" work done. I do encourage clients to take time outs, where they step away from their desk, or go play on Facebook, but only for 5 minutes or less. It is a powerful way to regain focus when we're mentally checking out from our work.
