  • My Vacation In Hawaii: A Lucky Winner's Story

    Your Dollarish author in Hawaii!
It's such a good feeling when something unexpected happens. You might find a dollar on the floor and feel lucky. Or maybe you'll wash a pair of jeans you wore last week and find an extra ten bucks in there. Or maybe you're lucky enough to win a contest. A few months ago, I wrote a post called: Congratulations! What have you won, where I described how I won a free trip to Hawaii. Last week, I was fortunate to enjoy my free trip and take a well needed break on the Big Island of Hawaii.

For 8 days and 7 nights, I got to stay in the lovely city of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The  University of The Nations sponsored the contest and paid for my flight from New York City to Kona Hawaii. All I had to do was choose a design for their new website (You had a choice of 3 designs) and it automatically entered you into the contest.

Part of the prize, which is a huge "Dollarish" deal in my eyes, included hotel accommodations on the campus itself. The huge bang for my buck was being able to eat on campus. This saved me a lot of money on eating out. Free flight, room, food and a weeks long vacation? I'm in!

I came very close to rescheduling my trip because of finance issues. Being unemployed and living on what my parents help me out with was hard to budget, especially going on a long vacation. Luckily, I was able to pull some money together with the help of my loved ones and had money to support myself overseas.

With about $300, I managed to do a lot of activities: Go on a 12 hour bus tour, see volcanoes, National Parks, Kayak,  Eat out sometimes, buy my loved ones nifty little souvineers and much more.

My vacation was truly a blessing and I am thankful for such a relaxing and fun experience!

Have you ever won anything crazy? Has anything ever stopped you from claiming a prize?

That's a pretty awesome vacation, and a terrific deal at that. You should buy a lottery ticket just in case you have another big win in you.

    You're Sweet!

@SoullFire@xanga - That was very sweet of you to say. Thank you!!! I would love to win the lotto and get rid of all my debt, finish school and buy my parents a freaking island for everything they've done for me. <3

    yay!

The Big Island is a beautiful place! And many people who do get good deals end up going to Maui or Oahu (that is where the capital is Honolulu) but both islands are very populated and crowded! The Big Island is much more laid back and more relaxed.

The Big Island has such a natural beauty of it! Was either Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea erupting? Even just a slight flow?
I grew up on Oahu in Honolulu and have only been to the Big Island, I have heard that Kauai is just as beautiful too.

What stops me from claiming a prize is that there are so many scams out there now that tells me that i've won a trip to here and there, but the first thing they ask me is my credit card number. =S

I wish I could win something like that, congrats!  Were you able to bring someone along with you?
