When I'm listening to the radio, I often hear songs about heartbreak, love or partying all night. A good friend of mine was telling me about his latest review of the Lady Gaga CD entitled: The Fame. He was able to put two and two together and mentioned how a lot of her songs relate to money.
It reminded me of a previous post about
Money in songs. Before I was told about Lady Gaga's album, I used to think not that many artists sang about money. There are obvious songs about money, but it was interesting to look at her album in depth and to see her talk about those dollars and everything that comes with it.
Lets start with the album title: The Fame. Obviously, who wouldn't want fame? As as a music artist, or even a celebrity figure in itself, the goal is essentially some kind of (positive) fame. To me, its a fabulous name for an album title. She really gives herself the image of an over the top artist, which that she is, at least in my opinion.
Then there is the song "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich." How blatantly obvious can you be about this song? Of course it is going to be about money!
"Bang Bang, we're beautiful and dirty richBang Bang, we're beautiful and dirty richWe live a cute life, soundfematic, pants tightTug'n' plasticHoney but we got no money." I've got the say, these lyrics are really strange. I don't know exactly what soundfematic means, but she made one thing clear. She lives the beautiful, dirty and rich life.
In another song, called: "Money Honey" she once again expresses her love for money, and also her honey.
"That's M-O-N-E-Y, so sexy, IDamn I love the Jag, the jet and the mansionOh yeaAnd I enjoy the gifts and the trips to the islandsOh yeahIt's good to live expensive you know it butMy knees get weak, intensive"Oh that love for the glamorous life again. I'm sure with the number of albums she has sold, she all of the things mentioned above. But later in the song, she says:
"You know I appreciate the finer thingsBut it's not what makes me happiest baby(I can do without it babe)Your tender loving's more than I can handleNever burn out this candle baby, baby"So Lady Gaga has a soft spot for the man in her life. But I wonder, if she had the choice of the finer life or her love, what would she really pick? Hmm.
And what about her hit song "Poker Face?"
"I wanna hold em' like they do in Texas PlaysFold em' let em' hit me raise it baby stay with me (I love it)Luck and intuition play the cards with Spade to startAnd after he's been hooked I'll play the one that's on his heart"Somehow, she has used the basic strategy of Texas Hold Em' Poker to express how she gets her man. Talk about poker with a guy and I think you'll already catch his eye. But once again, she is talking about gambling, not only with love, but money.
Do you think Lady Gaga sings about money more than most? Why do you think her songs are all about money? Do you think there's another single artist who focuses on money as heavily?

More like money and sex...ever listen to Love Game?
"I wanna take a ride on your disco stick." Wow, that's really, um...clever?
did you listen to her songs before she got very very famous while she was just a regular musicmaker? it's quite different.
God I hate Lady GaGa.
i prefer to listen to songs about vikings... and pirates. Songs about money are best left to AC/DC and Pink Floyd.
I was thinking she sang about sex more, but money does come up alot
@iso_whiteSnow@xanga - Oh my goodness, she had talent!
Either way, her music still sucks.
I think money is just her "thing" y'know? I like her style. It's that "so bad it's good" type thing. XD
@sarahzthoughts@xanga -
That line always cracks me up.
"Fame, doing it for the fame. 'Cuz we wanna live the life of the rich and famous."
<- You forgot that one. And yes.. money is definitely on the brains. However, I think she thinks about sex even more.
yeah, i do see that pattern. and the song paper gangsta hah
lots of people sing about money. lady gaga isn't the first name that came to mind when i thought of "bling" and money.
@MissPixieGlitter@xanga Ooooh I like this. Who comes to mind when you think of bling? =)
@dolcecorazon - mostly rappers, the kind like to sing about cars, "bling," and "hoes." "ride with me" by nelly comes to mind (mostly for references to his "benzie" and the line, "hey must be the money"), but i'm sure there are better examples out there. i liked when t-pain was making the parody rap video with taylor swift and his necklace said "big ass chain." :D
the world would be better minus lady gaga.
Lady GaGA is a shining example of the crap that's passed off as music these days. Utter crap, and that's saying it nicely.
Rappers totally out-do her in songs about money. However, I think Lady GaGa mentions the money because she's new in the business? She can really only flaunt that plus her "seductive" outfits when she performs. As crazy as it seems, I think talking about money is kind of natural nowadays in songs.
she also sings about sex.... a little bit too much
Not all of her songs are about money. Have you ever heard "Brown Eyes"? "No Floods"? "Fooled Me Again, Honest Eyes"? "Wonderful"?
I personally don't care what her songs are about, that damn woman is talented. She's been singing and playing the piano all her life. She puts her heart and soul into every single song she writes and sings. Her influences include Morrissey and John Lennon, not 50 Cent or Soulja Boy (whatever the fuck it's called). I believe she has more of a passion for music than for money, I can promise you that.
i've got her album, and yes a lot of the songs are about money. oh, and sex. lots of sex.
(:
gaga means stupid in tagalog
fits her quite well.
She's sexy
@Unstoppable_Inner_Strength@xanga - So true! Most newer music sucks. A lot of it isn't even real talent and it's done on computers and stuff. I hate all this new stuff.
I'm not very fond of Lady Gaga at all but I wouldn't listen to any music talking about how great it is being rich. Most people aren't and with the economy lots of people are losing money. I wouldn't want to listen to someone talking about how great it is to be her.
Sounds dumb.
Did it ever occur to you that "The Fame" just might be a concept album? All the songs are united by a theme of glamor and riches, or at least a thirst for those things. Her next album will probably blow your mind.
I dislike her songs. :[ Sex, sex, sex. Money, money, money. What's new?
