Soft Drinks: A Waste of Money?
Soda. Pop. Whatever you wanna call it, it can be a really easy way to "waste" money. As a disclaimer, I should say that I'm the type of person that will deprive themselves of simple pleasures in order to save a couple bucks, so what works for me might not work for you.
When you eat out at a restaurant, you may get a soft drink by default. However, ever since I moved to NYC, I've learned to save myself the couple bucks and just go with the water. This is because here, typically, there aren't free refills on soft drinks. Once you finish your hopefully large-ish glass of whatever it is, you'll have to pay full price for another. On top of that, it can usually cost up towards $5 dollars for a soft drink, so for me, it's just not worth it. There was one time where I got a second soda without thinking and ended up spending $10 on two glasses of Sprite! If you do so choose to get a soft drink at a restaurant, make sure you know if refills are free or not. Otherwise, you might have a slightly bigger bill than you expected. Besides, water will actually quench your thirst without filling your stomach up with bubbles!
Do you get soda when you go out to eat? How do you save money when you eat out at restaurants?

Yeah I do think when you go out to eat it is a waste of money to buy soda because it cost so much. It's ridicuolous..
I used to get a soda every time I went out. But, like you said, the soda is a waste of money so I always get a water with lemon. You're eating food anyway, you don't need something sugary or something with a full taste. Just something to wash the food down...
It's better for your health too.
If I go to the mall, I usually bring a bag of chips and a bottle of Green Tea or water for when I'm hungry while coming back or going there. I honestly hate buying food... the food in malls is so expensive. A slice of pizza from Sbarro is like what, $3.50 + Soda which is like $2.00. I could spend $5.50 on something cute on sale!
I don't drink pop anymore, so it has saved me a lot of money over the years. My boyfriend has also gotten in the habit of getting water when we go out to eat because it really adds up.
I'm with everyone else- soda just isn't worth it. I get water with lemon when I eat out too.
Actually, avoiding soda in restaurants helped me kick the soda habit in general. It's actually hard for me to drink it anymore because it tastes so sweet and almost...thick. Blech.
I stopped drinking pop in grade 9... 6 years ago! I guess it's saving me a ton of money now that I think about it, and I do always cringe when my brother asks for pop at a restaurant or buys cases and cases of them to bring home. Such a waste of space and money, and I always wound up more thirsty after drinking pop than having nothing to drink at all.
Depends on the restaurant....if I'm really in the mood for a soda, I'll get one...but usually I'll just have a soda or juice in my car on the way!
nah always order water! 'cause water = no calories :)
Most sodas are like $2, you can easily make that money up.
i just don't like the sweetness of sodas, so i prefer water.
I love soda, but I don't want to cut off my limbs anytime soon. So I just drink tons of water instead.
Water, or tea when I have money! I never order coke.
Where the hell do you eat that soda is $5 for a non-refillable glass? I've never spent more than $3 for unlimited refills at a restaurant.
That being said, restaurants are about the only place I get sodas. I go to restaurants so seldom that I figure I might as well splurge a bit.
I drink water. I'll drink soda every once in awhile but hardly. I don't like spending extra money and never really have.
I personally save money by not going out to eat unless its a special occasion. Sure I get a large coke everyday at work to get me through the day, but for unlimited refills I will gladly give McDonald's my dollar and 9 cents thrice a week.
i try to stay away from carbonated drinks as much as i can, although i havent been as loyal to it since ive been of legal age since i LOVE hiballs. my health teacher in the eighth grade told us that on avg, every carbonated beverage you drink decreases your immune system by 50% for the next 24 hours. im not sure if he was bsing or not but it stuck with me forever, so hopefully that helps me to dodge cancer in the future. It's all sugar anyway. It's a health and a wallet disaster. You're not missing out.
I either get water, Sprite, or Mt. Dew, depending on what I'm having with it.
It's totally worth it. P:i love soda.. but i don't drink it that much anymore for some reason, i'd much rather have beer
but if i eat a restaurant, i'll usually order soda since my area has free refills
sometimes i do, sometimes i dont.
i like tea most of the time.
yes i do. it's not that expensive here though. it's like 1 something a glass and some restaurants have free refills so it's even better.
I do get soda a lot. I like things with flavor, and it just seems to go well with going out to eat. But it is expensive, though where I live they usually give you free refills. It would save me about $2 though if I had water, and they can also put in a lemon for flavor. Not to mention it's overall healthier for you.
Usually I just order lemon water. Soda only on occasion. I also try to encourage my kids to drink juices that way they are filling up on food and not carbonation. =P
I live in Chicago and pops most of the times are under 3 bucks. And most places give free refills. New york is expensive!!
it depends but usually i just get water
