  • Frugality to the Extreme!

It's good to be frugal, but it's another thing to take it too far. I came across this money saving tip on the Consumerist.com:

"BRUSH WITHOUT TOOTHPASTE: Clean your teeth with a combination of salt and baking soda. Doesn't taste as good as toothpaste, but is much cheaper and better for your gums (my late husband was a dentist and I owe this one to him - he died at age 89 with all his teeth in his head!)"

My other favorite tips on this list were to "put a mason jar in your toilet," "you can only fit one eyedrop in your eye" and "ghetto iced latte."

Would any of you actually do this to save money on toothpaste?

What other crazy things do you do to save a little bit of money?

haha the organic toothpaste I use from wholefoods is mostly made of salt and baking soda. hahahaha

I don't think those are extreme, necessarily.  Putting a jar or brick in your toilet tank is actually a very good way to save water/money without sacrificing function. And I imagine saving on the little things would add up over time.

For me, I think the important thing is weighing time/convenience/safety vs. cost.  For example, is it worth going through a lot of hassle to save a few cents?  The brick in the toilet example would be a case where it saves money, but doesn't inconvenience you much at all, and so would be worth it.  The toothpaste one, I'm undecided on, it looks a little messy. Then again, if it really is better for you, why not?

I don't think any of those are crazy. If a doctor or such told me those, I'd consider doing them.

I agree with just_the. If it's too inconvenient, I wouldn't, but none of the above examples seem too bad.

The toothpaste idea sounds kinda gross. Toothpaste costs what, $5? And the tube lasts months and months...

That's what most baking soda toothpastes are made of.  That's not that extreme.

growing up i would brush with baking soda. white teeth and no cavities now. but u can get tooth paste at the dollar store. (obviously...for $1) so its really not that serious. LOL

I use the water from my condensation dryer to water my plants. And I try to bring a packed lunch to work if I can find the time to make one. Other than that, I'm not that frugal - I try, but I'm a let's-try-this-fancy-new-toothpaste kind of girl...

I don't understand the mason jar in the toilet thing. Could someone explain? o.O It sounds unclean.

  • BabushkaD@xanga

the mason jar is closed and its volume takes up space that would otherwise be filled with water. You save a jar's worth of water/money with every flush!

members of my family have always used baking soda and their teeth are white and clean. i don't know how well it works for breath though. i guess if i've never noticed it can't be too bad?
