  • Receipts: Is Your Proof of Purchase Necessary?

Whenever I go to the bank, I hate knowing how much I have left in my bank account. The fact that I am withdrawing cash only means a greater depletion of my already low funds. Whenever the last screen pops up asking me if I would like a receipt, I opt for no.

Meanwhile, my mother was cleaning a little last night and in the stacks of random paper she had lying around, she found a bank transaction from August 1994. It was a withdrawal receipt from Chemical Bank, a bank that does not even exist today! Then you have some people that are worried about Identity Fraud who will shred their receipts in the safety of their own homes, while someone who is good with their taxes will save every receipt they get when they spend money.

Do you save your receipts? Do you keep them or just toss them in the trash?

I save my receipts until I get home and can enter amounts into my spreadsheet.  After that, they're not useful and I pitch them.

If I buy clothes, medicine or general everyday things, I keep them atleast a week in case I need to return them. I bank online so I dont need receipts for those.

It's good to atleast take it & look it over before you throw it away. I work in retail & I see so many upset customers that could have avoided their problems had their kept or atleast read their receipt. I think stores should NOT take returns without a receipt because people are frauding the system now & that hurts the workers when money is lost.

of course! in case the cashier made a mistake or i'd want to return something?
it's a good way to keep track of how much you're spending.

I keep receipts for a while. I was taught to keep them for security reasons [if they say I didn't pay for gas or something at a store--also includes a time stamp..that could be a good alibi haha].

Shopping receipts, only if I'm hesitant about my purchase and would consider returning it.

Banking receipts, I always take with me and throw out when I get a new one from a new transaction. As long as I know my current balance and can reassure my parents with the proof that all is well, things are fine and dandy.

My husband and I started saving receipts just a few months ago. We try to save ALL of them, although I haven't figured out yet what we'll do with them all. A lot of them are for baby things in case we have to make a return/exchange or there is a recall.
