  • New York City Subway Prices Rise Again!

After a long weekend of fun in the city, it was time for me to hop on the subway and go home. I encountered a huge group of angry commuters screaming at the poor clerk agent. Plastered on every turnstile was a small sign saying "FARE IS $2.25. GET A QUARTER. THANK YOU" I was shocked and upset about prices going up again. I did not even know they were supposed to go up! With summer just flying by, everyone forgot about the plan to delay the fare hike to June 28th.

New Yorkers: Were you surprised about the fare hike? How will this effect your commute? If you're not from New York, do you think $2.25 is too much to pay to get around?

GRR. I think it's because of mismanagement by the MTA that the riders have to keep paying the price. It is frustrating because some of teh stations and trains just aren't worth the rising prices. Case in point: my above ground station, which looks like it's going to literally fall apart at any second. I've had nightmares about it.

Where I live the bus fares go up all the time. They have to keep it running and updated somehow.

I'm pretty upset. I go to college in the city. Good thing I live on campus and everything is in walking distance...so I don't have to get off campus at all.. But still.. that means I won't be able to go anywhere because I'm a poor college student. D=

It's still a great deal compared to San Diego. Out here they charge between $2 and $5 depending on distance and route (express or regular) taken.

Now get this- they don't give you free transfers so whenever you have to switch to a new bus or trolley so you have to pay another full fare. That means if you have to make a couple of transfers, you could wind up paying over $10 one way. In that case it's cheaper to get a $5 day pass or buy a metro card.

if the service doesn't suck then it wouldn't be so bad...but it does.

  • PrincessYnattirb@xanga

it doesn't affect me when i'm in school ( full fare metro card)
@SoullFire@xanga - yeah, compared to that its actually not that bad.

@SoullFire@xanga - It's true that public transportation costs more in CA, but I don't think it's a fair comparison.  You have to remember that millions of people rely on mass transit in NYC, whereas in most of California and non-urban areas in the US, everything is spread farther apart and many more people drive than take public transit.  I think it's because New Yorkers rely on the buses and subways so much that we feel the pinch every time the fares go up, and this is a major hike.  When the fares go up, the service gets crappier.  There are fewer buses and subways, the ones that do arrive are a LOT more crowded, they're dirtier, and worst of all, transit workers are losing their jobs.  We have no choice but to pay the fare if we want to get to work or school.

In DC, it depends on how far you are going. I pay 4.50 each way to and from work.

Eh, why not get the monthly pass? Though now I'm glad I went to New York earlier in the month, I used the subway way too much then haha. I remember reading some ads while riding in the subway about the monthly pass Metro card price about to go up in price too. The ad was trying to promote people to buy MTA or New York transit stocks or something. Now if that happened, THAT would suck... :(

I remember about the fare hike, I wanted to buy another unlimited metrocard before hand but they only have a 7 day grace period. i just wished they would hike it up every year.

2.25 per ride and 89.00 per month is SMALL compared to the originally proposed fare hike. Monthly cards were going to go from 81.00 to 106.00 (roughly) before Albany approved a plan to "help" the MTA who cant seem to get it together.

@planetedie@xanga - I hear where you're coming from. As a former NY'er, I would LOVE to be able to use the mass transit out here in place of my car, but once you leave NYC, you quickly learn that mass transit for many places is truly not ready for prime time. Aside from the extra cost, the bus/trolley doesn't run nearly as often as NYC's services. It's more like scheduling a short road trip than it is a daily commute if you live more than a few miles from downtown.

Next, the bus routes are not mirror images of each other. What I mean by that is that if you get off on a bus on one side of the street, there is no guarantee the bus going back the other way is on the opposite side of the street....as in even located on that street at all. This is crazy in my opinion.

The last deal beaker is that the service shuts down at night. If you're not on your last ride by around 9pm, you are marooned for the evening...and it's even earlier for the weekends.

People drive more out here because the mass transit is still quite sucky. As bad as NYC's mass transit can be, it beats the pants off of most other cities transit systems when you consider it's 24 hour nature and distance covered.

I drive more here because using mass transit I will wind up paying about the same or more in transit fees as I would in gas and be seriously inconvenienced to boot.
