  • Can You Deal with No A/C?

Air Conditioners in people's houses are a moderately new invention. It hasn't been that long that people have had them in their houses and now people are saying that they wouldn't survive the summer without them. Air Conditioning also uses up a lot of energy and runs up a large bill.

Do you have A/C in your house? Do you think that you need it or would you be okay without it?

Ha, I've done almost three summers without it!!!! It's not great, especially at night, but hey, just use fans or fork out the cash to use your AC.

  • husbandofawife@xanga

You take cold showers, eat cold food, drink cold drinks, sit in front of fans, and you forget about hoochy coochy. It's to stinkin hot. During the day you put your bathing suit on and sit under a sprinkler or mister. We did it once. We went to movies, out to eat in air conditioning. Lived in the mall all day long.

It's going to be 104 degrees tomorrow. Not a good time to test your endurance.

At my parents house there is no A/C or heat, just a wood/coal furnace. I survived many summers there with out A/C and it never bothered me a bit. My Hubby on the other hand is huge on having the house at 70 degrees and it drives me nutty! Not only does it cost a fortune but I freeze during the day!

I am flat out spoiled. I don't want to know what it's like without air conditioning [again]. I work in it, I live in it, everything. The only time I don't have air on is when I'm outside..
Anyway, I've been without ac, but I'd rather not deal with it again. It's hard to sleep when it's hot. My house is like Antarctica and I LOVE it. We are in the triple digits with this crazy heat, so I treasure the cold air.

NOTE: You can always bundle up until you're warm, but you can never strip down enough to cool off.

To an extent. My dad doesn't like turning it on when it gets mildly warm, obviously because we don't need it and it sucks up energy and adds costs. Since we spend most of our time in the downstairs/basement (which is mostly ground level, since the ground slants on our property), it's cooler down here but my brother can't stand it when he's home. We've had AC since before I was born, both in our previous house and this house, but this house has central AC.

If it ever gets above 35-45C inside the house and in the shade, I would opt to turn it on because my parrots would probably die of heatstroke. I could easily sit myself in a tub of cold water, but I couldn't ask them to do that all day long.

I pretty much need it. I wouldn't mind during the day, unless I had to entertain, because I wouldn't want to get sweaty. But my parents keep the temperature at 78, and it's easily a few degrees higher in my room (back of the house, above the garage).

I've gotten pretty used to it, and I think I'd be ok if I had a fan, but some days I can't stand it.And I've tried to sleep like that, and it's really hard. Even when I don't wear anything, I'm still hot.

I unfortunately don't have AC in my house. My parents say the "wiring can't support it"...yet instead, I run two fans all night...one window fan and one oscillating fan...with the whole Energy Star thing these days, I bet an AC would use less power!

When I get my own place, I will have to suck it up and pay the outrageous bill for AC. I have a really hard time without it, especially as the humidity climbs.

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i have central ac in my house but it doesn't really work :[ and i dont have regular ac. so i'm gonna sweat it out this summer like summer. RAWR

  • imakeyoufree1@xanga

I live in the south, so we NEED a/c to live in 100 degree weather.

  • FreeeVerse@xanga

Ha, I live in TROPICAL WEATHER, but I don't have an aircond in my room. Never had it since I was born, until now, 25 years later. I don't need it at all - a ceiling fan is enough!

  • FreeeVerse@xanga

And oh, I was in Spain during summer, it was 43 degrees Celsius, and there was no AC in my room or house. And at night, I slept with a sweater. HA.

  • Gentemann@xanga

I used to when we were kids...and there was no AC in the cars or in our school...summer we could attend in shorts and barefooted!!!!

I live in California so there is really no need for AC, unless ur spoiled.

  • kmiahali@healthkicker

I could live without AC but it adds a nice touch when you're trying to enjoy a peaceful sleep, especially in the summer time.

  • bonEtuh@xanga

we haven't installed the AC in our house yet this year. it hasn't been that hot yet which is kind of ridiculous. but i try to use it as little as possible.

  • naughtygrrl@xanga

electric fans? leave the windows open.

  • xiaosnowtenshi@xanga

I can deal w/o A/C for a short period (i.e. a month), as I've spent many summers in Asia and air conditioning isn't common over there. However, I have no ceiling fans in my apartment and just one portable fan...so yes, I need AC in my Texas apartment.

  • radicalramblings@xanga

A/C is relatively new but so are concrete cities with a serious lack of plants and green grass to absorb the heat instead of reflecting it back on people.  I can do just fine without air conditioning if I am not in the middle of the city of Houston, but here... it is unbearable in the summer.  Buildings block the breeze, asphalt reflects the heat, and all of the trees have been cut down to make way for more structures.

  • bukeshow@xanga

HELL no you ever been to TX its hot as HELL literally. I'm melting right now.

  • xchinkylaydee@xanga

AC is needed in sacramento. it's like bipolar weather here. i usually don't use it as much as i can though.

  • Usuratonkachi_san@xanga

I don't have it. Never had it and I'm 20. Even though it's possible to live without, I'd rather have it for the REALLY hot days. 85 degrees and up, but any less than that I'd just break out the fan to save energy.

  • prettyboy78@xanga

Depends on where you live and how much the heat bothers you. I live an area where it is an average temperature of 105F from the end of May through mid September with high humidity so it feels way hotter with heat index as well.
I could do it if I had to but would hate it, I would much rather be cold than hot.

  • MsButterworth311@xanga

I have window units, and while my apartment doesn't feel nearly as cool as it did with central air, it's more energy efficient because I only cool the room I'm using. I have one in my bedroom (that cools both bedrooms) and one in the livingroom that also cools the kitchen. I run whichever one I'm closest to. There are usually a few hours in the day where I can have them both off before it gets unbearable.

  • TwoHalvesOfAWhole@xanga

No a/c at my place but where I live, it doesn't even hit the high 70s often...

But if I leave the city, I'll definitely need one. I'm not one to handle heat well.

  • bluetrashcan@xanga

Ugh, unfortnately, no. It's a terrible thought. It really helps with the asthma control, and I hate feeling hot. I just turn it off when I'm not at home.
