After the Global Earth Summit in Tokyo, Japan last November I guess i am more aware these days of ecological issues.
True of False: America's paper bag consumption uses 14 million trees a year. The answer is: True
According to the Sierra Club and other environmental think-tanks, paper bags are just as harmful to the environment when you look at the overall impact behind their production and consumption - where the source material comes from, how energy-intensive they are to make; and how difficult they are to recycle or reuse.
One of the paper bag's more obvious impacts is deforestation. While America's consumption of plastic bags uses up 12 million barrels of oil a year, it's consumption of paper bags fells 14 million trees a year.
It has even been suggested that paper bags cause more global warming than plastic bags, simply because they take up more space so need extra transportation, using up energy.
Others have said the reverse, that because of the energy used in the production process, plastic bags still remain the greatest scourge on the environment of the two.
What do you get your groceries in, paper or plastic? Do you reuse the bags for other things around the house?

I reuse plastic bags as garbage bags.
For shopping, I use those cloth or plastic reusable bags which can be bought at the supermarkets.
I use my own canvas bags to get my groceries. They're strong and can carry a lot more than plastic bags. I do reuse plastic bags as liners for my trashcans around the house.
before i used my own grocey shopping bag, we used plastic. stores like albertsons still use plastic at least thats what i always get from the bagboy. i mainly use the leftover plastic bags for trash cans in the bathroom and in my room. its weird cause i never for once got a paper bag from a grocery store.
I use reusable grocery totes. They come in handy in all sorts of ways and have paid for themselves several times over.
I like paper but they always give ma a plastic ...
Yes ,I do ...
Re-reused our plastic bags in supermarkets, we got some of those canvas shopping bags we we use instead of supermarket plastic carry bags.
I reuse all of my plastic bags. If I accumulate too many at one point, I take them back to the grocery store to get them recycled.
I try to carry canvas bags in my car at all time for groceries, mall purchases and what ever else in between.
I actually keep my canvas bags in my car so they are always handy when out shopping. Most places are very good about using my canvas bags but I still get the occasional plastic bag put inside the canvas bag which I reuse to line my trashcan.
I try to bring my reusable bags as much as possible. However, when I forget to grab them, I choose paper. We reuse the paper bags to sort our recycling each week, that way the collectors can just recycle the paper bags right along with everything else.
I always carry a tote bag around, usually big enough to store my buys from the supermarket,
i try to use the plastic bags they give as much
Don't you guys have those recyclable bags in the shops?
I have a big pile of plastic bags that I reuse as trash bags. Whenever possible I don't use a bag at all. Like yesterday I bought some toilet paper at Walgreens and told them I don't need a bag for it. I do that a places like Walmart too but they just tell me to have my receipt handy.
I use canvas totes.
