This next story will make you feel very sorry for an old lady, while shaking your head and wondering why she didn't put the money in the bank.

"According to a story on CNN.com, In Tel Aviv, Israel, a woman gave her elderly mother a new mattress. It was a gift, and the daughter tossed out the old bed.Well, the mother had her life savings stuffed inside the mattress -- almost $1 million. So as you read this, there's a huge search going on at the city dump with security guards keeping out the public, fearing, of course, that otherwise there's going to be something resembling the California gold rush of 1849."
This is nothing new. Elderly people hate the banks. They think the banks are out to take their money, plus many elderly people have never had any trouble with money while keeping it at home.
I know my mom has put money in pillows before. It actually came in handy the one time our apartment caught fire. She just walked out with the pillows. Inside the pillows were all our passports, social security cards and important documents.
Have you ever put money inside a mattress or pillow before? What did you think when you saw the title of the woman losing her money?

hmm i feel sorry for her, but she could have had so much more than a million if she invested it
Wow. I'd be depressed.
The only thing that I've ever put in my pillow or under the matress was my diary when I was ten.
"Elderly people hate the banks. They think the banks are out to take their money,..."
That's because they are most likely old enough to remember the Great Depression (either directly or through their parents) when the banks literally did take their money by closing down- and there was no FDIC insurance back then so any money you had in a bank that failed was gone for good.
Even though the rules have changed, it's hard to change perception. As the saying goes...
"A cat, having jumped up on a hot stove, will not jump on a hot stove again. However, the cat will no longer jump on a cold stove either."
OUCH! That has to hurt!
* booking my flight to Israel as I type this*
@Shades_of_Athena@xanga - bring me with you
her house got on fire O_o and the mattress' money went along with it :X
Yea that is pretty sad - and the Great Depression run on the banks did make most of that generation not trust banks.
But, wow... it's gotta be some sort of tax evasion and hiding away pension money from the government. This is because the government would likely reduce pensions if the recipient is deemed to have enough money.
Also, not that cash is losing out to inflation (Though nowadays having that cash is probably better off than a lot of other people) and if it is in USD? Probably, worth evenless now.
It would have been better to have bought gold, silver, and other precious metals instead as they would be a hedge against inflation and also have more value in the chance that there happened to be a "run on the banks" (despite new institutions like the FDIC?) that she experienced in the old days.
I think a run on the banks is technically possible still despite the FDIC. Recently, banks were told to increase the amount of money put aside for the FDIC funds - just in case - as more banks were failing.
wow, that is pretty sad....
I used to hide money under my pillow and in my pillowcase but ever since my little brother uncovered my secret hiding location, i had to change it!
moohoohahahah
i have a habit of collecting checks until i actually need them or til they hit the 3 month period and become void. i'd be pissed at the daughter. if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
just like a spongebob episode! :D .. but i feel bad for her though :(
@Shades_of_Athena@xanga - that was my first thought too, I need to go to Israel soon. Funny thing is I've been seeing a lot of travel to Israel ads lately. That might be a sign.
you'd think you'd remember you've been stuffing a million dollars worth of cash in your mattress for over x amount of years. anyway, it's a shitload to lose.
what a shame.
Sadness! I hope they find it...
damn taht sucks for her =T i hope they find it though
I would disown that child. Or at least beat them. Or hire someone to beat them if I was too old, after I Found my million dollars.
that REALLY sucks....
@JadedJanissary@xanga - lol! the kid was just being nice! >.<
That is a crazy amount of money to lose! That woman must have been really good at keeping it a secret if even her family didnt know!
I do keep money at home - but I think the mattress and pillow are not the best places to keep money because everyone knows to look there!
that's depressing, but jesus-- i really hate how old people horde their money. it's fine to keep, you know, $20,000 or so for yourself outside of expenses and such, but do old people really need all that money? it pisses me off. now look what this old lady did, causing a ruckus because of her stupid habits.
My aunt keeps it in a frozen broccoli bag in her freezer.
@shes_askinnyone@xanga - hey, if she earned it why not keep it! :P
@kash@healthkicker - it is a sign! and think of all the historical sites you will visit and floating in the dead sea while reading a news paper with the money from the mattress.
@ipinkyflower@xanga - deal! lol
that's really awful. I hope that woman gets her money back.
I use to hide my money under my mattress but now I keep it in a safer place.
