  • Coupons: Do They Make You Spend More Money?

As I type this post, I'm staring at a coupon from Express that's offering me $20 off my purchase of $60 or $30 off my purchase of $90.  What I hate about these coupons are the fact that it actually gets me into the store which eventually leads me to buying something.

Right now I'm thinking about buying some polos they have on sale at the store for around 20 bucks each. (they retail for around $38).  If I get 3, I can get the $20 off and get 3 for $40 bucks.

The problem is, do I want to spend another $40 bucks on polos?

I have a few already I wear to work but most of them are bigger (bought them during my slightly overweight stage).  I wear them during the winter so I can tuck it in.  In the summer, it's too hot to tuck in anything.

But back to the coupon. It's just sitting there, yelling at me to go and redeem it at the nearest Express store, which is only 5 minutes away.

Coupons tend to do this to me, the same way many women fall for sale signs in store windows.  I won't really go into a store unless I have a coupon, especially if it's a store that I usually buy clothes from. Those coupons suck me into the store where I end up giving them more money. I need to find a way to stop.

Either way, I'm still debating whether or not I should go and buy the clothes.  By the time this post goes live, I might have bought them already.  We'll have to wait and see.

Are you more inclined to buy something if you have a coupon?  Do you fall for sale signs outside of store windows?

Yah, I think that's the idea behind coupons to get you into the store and buy extra stuff you really didn't need.

I have a list and stick to it.  I don't spend a whole lot on groceries a month.  I'm working taking our groceries down to about $150 from $200 a month for a family of 5 and that includes hba and pet food.

It's a lot of work though and I have to stay on top of things and what we need.

    Dont do it!

I always use coupons.  Especially when it comes to clothes!  But I wont go to the store unless I need something!  I dont even look at the ads!  They definitely can suck you in.  But you must be strong and resist!

Think of all of the money you could save if you didnt give into the coupons.  You could have cash instead of stuff!

Usually but you save more in the long run I think. How a majority of coupons work is the item(s) will be full priced & they take the discount off of that. With clothing coupons, an item is sometimes marked down & the sale is taken off that & so on. You may spend more but they know you save money so they impose limits.

To avoid giving into temptation, I try to buy based on necessity. Food coupons I'm more relaxed on because you cant not eat but I dont have to buy a new shirt every week.

Haha damnit, i hate seeing people buy things just because they have coupons!!! When i see a coupon for something that I always buy, then i use it. I actually saved $20 on a $100 bill of groceries for my usual pick of stuff. It can come in handy if you use them wisely!

Of course coupons make you spend more money. That's the whole point.

When there's a special discount when you have the total at whichever dollar and get how many percent off, I usually say no because yeah I agree, they do make you spend more. It's better to stick with what you need.

You're better off not getting too many of the same. Two is good enough to change and stuff.

I'm pretty addicted to the 40% off coupons at Borders.  But the last time I was there, I resisted.

I hate those coupons.  I spend $40 to save $20...doesn't make sense!!

If I do go into a clothing store, I'm more likely to head for the clearance rack.  I like the 40% off clearance signs!!

Sometimes. I took my dorm room shopping list to Best Buy with a coupon from one of my credit cards and decided to see how much of it I could get there. I didn't get all of it, but more than I would've otherwise.
