  • Cell Phones - Are They Worth The Money?

Our contract on our cell phone is expiring soon and we are trying to decide if we should continue to have one or not. I would love to hear from people on both sides. The pros and the cons of cell phones.

I have had a cell phone since I was 16 (11 years) so it would be weird not to have one but is it worth the money?

Cell phone.....Do you have one? Why or why not? Do you think it's worth the money?

I have a friend that doesn't use a cell phone to save money. He seems fine without it. But sometimes I find it annoying when I can't contact him or reach him when I really want to talk.
I enjoy having a cell phone. I think at my age... It's convenient.. and even in dating, text messages help keep spark and contact

Since (atleast in our case) cell phones are cheaper than landlines, we're taking long distance off ours & just keeping local & internet.

I was 15 when I first got mine but I wanted it for security. I went to school an hour from home & there isnt always a phone or spare change to call home so & I bugged my parents with that until I got my phone. And I dont have a high tech 500 in one gadget. I strictly call & text.

I need mine because pay phones are nearly extinct and I carry children around with me a lot. I don't want to find myself on a cold rainy dark road with a load of children and a flat tire or broken down and no way to call someone I trust for help. Not long ago I was traveling in Illinois when a tailgate flew off a huge truck in front of me bouncing wildly on the interstate and slicing both my left tires. We were a ten minute drive from any exits and I am very thankful I had my cell phone because I would not have wanted to sit on the side of the interstate with all those chiildren for who knows how long or try to walk them all on the side of a busy interstate to go for help, or worse have to put them in danger by accepting a ride with a stranger. I don't like spending a lot every month on cell bills so I compromised and got a prepaid phone. I only pay for the minutes I use.

depends on the user. if your life style doesn't require immediate communication with either friends, family, clients, work, etc. then living without a cell shouldn't be a problem. especially if you're at home or working on the computer all the time, there's always the home phone and the internet/e-mail/instant messaging to keep in contact.

i would say that a cell phone is not a necessity, but a very convenient item to have. but a definitely a must have if you got a robust social life or business oriented profession though! i don't know anything about costs or money though.. but if you do the research, there ought to be suitable plan fit for your life style and needs.

it is if you have those no contract phones which i used to have.  i bought mine from best buy and it was one of those no contract phones which i loved.  granted, it didnt have the "basic features" like texting or camera (i didnt want the text cause they charge separate) but it worked great and there was no hefty bill to pay every month.  just buy a phone card or have them take it from your account every month and thats it.  im all for no contract phones and if you dont like it you could cancel anytime whereas with contracts you cant.  you have to pay if you cancel early.  pros and cons.  and im still going to buy from best buy and the same phone too (if they still have it) cause its just too cute :)

I personally think it's convenient to have one around. I've had times where my car has broken down or some reason or another I've gotten stranded somewhere. Sometimes out in the middle of nowhere. If I hadn't had a cell phone I don't even want to think of how long it would have taken my family to find me. I like how I can always get ahold of people and how people can always get ahold of me.
I guess it just depends on your lifestyle too. Some people would benefit from one and some wouldn't.
I think it's worth the money for me.

yes i HAVE A cell phone. And to me, its very cost effective. I have boost unlimtied, so I dont need a house phone. and im only payin 50 a month for communication every way i use it and i dont even have to carry around an ugly work phone. Its very worth it to me. and then also.. there are those unexpected events that take place randomly.

  • tastytimmm@xanga

    Family plan + discounts + no texting = 550 minutes + roll-over for only $60 a month i think.

  • aznbunny604@xanga

I only pay $25 a month for my plan. My phone came free with a 3 year contract so it's awesome!

I couldn't be without a cell, and it's nice to have something on hand during an emergency.

Can't live without one.  But I don't spend much on phones anymore.  I think it's a waste of money unless you need the internet for work related stuff.  I just get the basic free/cheap phones.

  • inspireothers@xanga

you can always get those promotional plans, they're super cheap ! or you can just get the prepaid ones? O-O' but it might be a hassle though ..

  • life_musings@xanga

well depends on its uses and features, and whether it fills your very own needs. for me text messaging, calling and internet surfing are the leading features i look in a good phone.
