  • Why I Wouldn't Want To Be Rich

On the way home from my aforementioned trip with my friends, we got into a rousing discussion about whether or not we'd like to be rich.

My explanation was simple. I said no. I never really cared too much about money.  I've always been one of those guys that's been just fine with what I have as long as I'm comfortable and get to spend it with family and close friends.

I'd like to have have enough savings to pay off my future kid's college tuition and plan some trips around the globe.  Plus once you become rich, all of a sudden everyone becomes your best friend.

And what about your current friends. No matter what anyone says, they'll want some money too because you're rich now.  And when you go to hang out with your friends?  They'll expect you to pay for everything.  That's how rich people end up losing all their money because they don't know how to balance it properly.  The best way to avoid that problem is not to be rich in the beginning.

Everyone in the car pretty much agreed except for one.  My friend Jason said he would love to be rich, so he can just sit back and do nothing.  He hates his job and says he'd be able to balance friends and family so no one comes to him asking for money. We argued for some time because we knew he'd never be able to balance anything.  He's one of those guys that has trouble saving money and god know what he would do if he became rich all of a sudden.

Would you ever want to be rich?  Why or why not? Can you balance family and friends who will be asking you for money?

No, for all of your reasons, and because too much materialistic things ruin a person, and money=just that.

  • IamKelleyK@xanga

I don't want to be rich.  For all of the same reasons.  But also because I think that true joy has nothing to do with money.  Being completely debt free though - that's another story.  I would like that very much.

I wouldn't want to be rich. And if I ever did win the lottery all of a sudden or something I would envest it right.  I wouldn't let it get to me.  I'm really simple.  I don't need money to be happy. OH and about your friend doing nothing all day...that gets pretty boring! Especially if all your friends work all day. =)

  • justXforXyou_beautiful@xanga

No, because I've seen how the more money my grandma and cousin have acquired, the bigger bitches they've become o.O

    sad, but true
  • inspireothers@xanga

I wouldn't want to. I'd like be financial happy but not millionaire+ type rich. Just enough to pay for all the bills, have some spare grand for future emergencies etc etc.

If I had enough money, I'd be tempted to spend it by going out to eat, treat myself and others better. Even if I put it all in my bank under savings - don't touch - account. :X

I would hate to be rich.
Rich people ARE snobby for the most part.
Everyone would want my money, and they would bitch if I were to say no. Especially my "family" that has basically disowned me. They would come crawling back just for money, because that is just the way people are now a days. All freaking money hungry.

  • methodElevated@xanga

Yes, because I know all too well how horrible it is to be dirt poor... to starve, have no heat and be homeless.

I would be responsible with my money and not let it corrupt me or my friendships.  I would likely give away as much as possible to worthy charities, too.

  • MOJOJONO_X2@xanga

I used to think that way, but then I realized it is better to be rich.

But if you want to be flashy about it, then you'll have to deal with the consequences.  Friends that would expect you to pay and even think of it are at best left at arms length.

Having just enough is unrealistic, because once you have just enough, you realize you don't have enough.  Something will always come up as your life expands.  Maybe unforseen medical bills and you will want to purchase premium quality goods to take better care of yourself and your family.  Not to mention the issue with things such as taxes and inflation that will eat away at whatever money you have.

if your reason were to be true, there wouldn't be any rich people. Those rich people know how to strike that balance.

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

i would like to be rich so i can have endless amounts of cash flow but then again, it would make me appreciate less the things that i work really hard for.  i feel like when i have money, i'm just basically using it on useless things.

  • iso_whiteSnow@xanga

I want to be rich, not appear to be rich. You do not have to let people know your $$$. I want to be rich, so i do not have to worry much about finance.

  • BelisaAmbrose@xanga

Personally, I'd love to be well off.  I've had dalliances with money before, but if it came into my life again, I don't think I'd tell anyone that I was financially better than ok, I'd be frugal.

This depression to me has been a well needed kick in the butt, because before I'd have made money easy and not appreciated it, whereas now I'm more frugal and more appreciative of every dollar that comes into my life.

I've definately made changes for the better of how I use and spend money, and I'm a better person because of it.    .

  • blufrogz37@xanga

just once i'd like to be rich.
money wasted, is money wasted (rich or poor).
    not having enough money sucks.
i already know what at or below the poverty line is.

it's simple : if i were rich, my life and the world around me would change. i wouldn't party...i'd pay off debt and do some real, honest good work. not for a photo op...but because it's the right thing to do. the correct thing to do.

this world is screwed up because the whole world has its priorities backwards. ( i'll get off my soap box now.)

I would love to be rich, so I can take care of my hard working, mother (who was a single parent), so she can finally rest and enjoy life. And so I won't ever have to worry about money. I also would want to help my future kids with their college tuition. And if people only try to be my friend because of money, too bad, I do not support and hang around users.

  • playswithlife@xanga

If your friends expect you to pay just because you can .. get new friends ;)

  • NetworkingWitches@xanga

I would like to be able to pay all of my bills each month and have a bit extra left over but I don't need to be rich.

Before I made a bad investment and lost that investment I was going to donate the majority of the money to chairity.

  • tastytimmm@xanga

I would love to be rich so I could make some charities and donate to some or figure out some way to help the world. Never really thought about people becoming my friend and stuff because I had money. I always thought about using it for helping it others...

I want to be financially secure and comfortable.  My needs aren't really huge, so being "rich" would probably not be a necessity.

  • wolvenchic@xanga

lol well I'd still like to be rich. Why? because you dont HAVE to tell everyone you have money. There are millionares out there who shop at Walmart.

If I were rich, een if I didnt use it for myself... I could do something for other people, donate, help people get back on thier feet...expecially in this economy!

  • angi1972@xanga

I'd like to be rich. I think that you don't always have to flaunt your wealth, so I'm not sure that most of my friends would know I was wealthy... Besides I love the idea of being able to help out my friends and family when I can.

  • glyndalomax@xanga

Hey - I tried to add you as a friend but it won't work

  • WAHMBooks@xanga

When you are a student, it is acceptable to be poor and get by, but being poor when you are old is not fun. It is not fun to live on welfare and have to depend on your social security check.  Many people who are self-employed don't claim enough and don't even have a good social security check unless they save in an IRA or other plan.  There are so many seniors who live on cat food and have to watch everything that they spend. Living on a fixed income when there is inflation and goods just keep costing more each year is not fun.

It is better to be rich.  If someone loses their job, isn't it better to be able to get by than to have to depend on credit cards?

  • aznbunny604@xanga

When you're rich, it's hard to distinguish between real and fake friends/family and what you value most in life. I would like to be well-off, but probably not stinkin' rich.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

Coming from an affluent family, I will say that I appreciate everything I have. I used to be very spoiled until one day when my dad bought a bunch of McDonalds and took me to a group of homeless people sitting around a makeshift campfire. From that day on, I realized how many people in the world lived. Many people had never heard of a phone, a computer, a car...it would be hard to imagine from their shoes.

Now, being rich isn't all that and a bag of chips. I come from an "old rich" family (we have roots in the early oil business). We are conservative and do not talk about/flaunt our wealth because we feel that is trashy and not distinguished. "New rich" people are those who buy 5 different cars and only dress in designer clothes and it's a necessity to have jets and mansions in six countries. "New rich" are people who kind of just acquired wealth and want to SHOW it off.

So knowing I have money to fall back on is good. Although I have friends of my "status", it's weird to hang around them because they have better cars and clothes, but I'm okay driving around a 12 year old Ford with 148,000 miles on it. I'm okay shopping at Wal Mart. My dad taught me that giving away a little money to charity and saving it and investing money properly is the smart way to be wealthy.
