This past week I've been reading about
Time Warner and their new plan to put a cap on internet bandwidth.
Of course everyone knows they they're doing it, online video is more popular than ever. Why would I need to get cable when I can watch everything on sites like
Hulu or
Netflix for much cheape and in Hulu's case, free.
It affects me and my family because we don't have any other option for internet service. Time Warner is the only company providing service in our area. Verizon still hasn't rolled out their
FiOS service in our area and none of the satellite companies are not allowed to put anything on our building walls or fire escape.
This puts us in a tough position. Currently we pay $29.99 a month, for internet on two computers. My family doesn't watch shows on TV, we're never home at the same time. We end up watching it through our Netflix account or Hulu.
What Time Warner wants to do is cap the internet usage and introduce tiers of service. Their new unlimited plan is most likely going to be $150, according to a NY Times report. There is no way in hell am I going to pay $150 for internet service.
In terms of our current usage, we're around 50GB per month. Time Warner's first tier service caps at 60GB. Although we fall under the cap, I'm afraid watching a few more shows or downloading some movies will go over the cap.
What their doing is wrong but the greedy execs want to dry out the consumers as much as possible, since their cable service is going down the drain due to the popularity of online videos. Time warner is going to lose customers, because I'm sure no one will not appreciate an increase in price for capped internet usage.
I already asked my siblings to cut back on usage just to see if we can continuously fall under the 60GB cap. If not then we might have to look into a different tier of service. Only if we has more options, I would have dropped Time Warner in a heart beat.
What would you do if your internet provider capped their service and asked for more money per month? Are you a Time Warner customer? What are your options?

why not try AT&T Uverse?
WHATTTTT
oh no.
Time Warner's the only place in my area too
: (
It all boils down to the consumer. If enough people complain and drop their service instead of paying the increased rates, they will change the business plan.
That would really, really bother me. I'm glad I don't use time warner, I'm already getting ripped off enough.
O_o
time warner's the only provider in my area as well. i've been waiting for FiOS.... =\
I feel the same way about being screwed with internet service - the only high speed option I have is Comcast.
I wouldnt be too worried about it if I were you - a jump from 50 to 60 is pretty significant.
I loathe TWC. I got rid of their service a few months ago.
