What Not To Do or Say To People Working in Retail
These are my top 14 favorites since nearly every job I had was in the retail world. Enjoy!
1) Why don’t you know what’s on sale?! You work here!
Yes that’s true but I don’t know EVERY SIGN on EVERY RACK. I know the details of a store wide sale, if it’s senior’s day or not, and if card holders get a special discount. I don’t know how much the patio table in the Home store is if I’m the cashier but I would be happy to check the circular for you or call an associate in that department if you don’t scream at me.
2) This is why you work here!
You’re not better than me because you have a 6 figure job and I’m working here to pay for college and other expenses until I can do better and there’s nothing wrong with people who work retail for a living. I hate when people assume someone is lazy or stupid because they work a job in retail. It may not be the best paying job out there but I firmly believe there is dignity in all work.
3) Give me X amount off this product.
I can be fired, prosecuted and put on a nationwide list that calls me a criminal if I change prices incorrectly or give away stuff. It’s the same as stealing. Each job varies but unless I get a supervisor or manager’s approval, I cant take money off a product or price changes. If it came from a department I work in or I am told to do so under certain times, I can do corrections and changes. Also, nearly everything is computerized and has to be updated daily, so please forgive me if a price change or sale isn’t in the computer yet. I don’t control that, managers and corporate does.
4) Cursing or screaming because I’m not moving fast enough to your liking.
I’m sorry if you used up your lunch break waiting in line but you wouldn't’t like me to rush you off the register so why rush the person in front of you? I understand believe me! I get 30 minutes lunches and 15-20 minute breaks so I understand time limits but if you don’t have time, it may be better to wait for your free time. I also tell people we have layaway and the store hours in case they cant wait and most people don’t object to that.
5) Getting pissed at me when I ask for ID.
Certain things can only be purchases if you’re of age and senior discounts are only given to SENIOR CITIZENS. Each state is different but how can you be mad at ME when YOU’RE basically trying to steal by lying? This goes back to #3. Every transaction has my employee number and things I did, I can be fired for not doing what I’m supposed to. And please don’t ask me to guess your age. I don’t want to unintentionally hurt feelings.
6) Telling me you have a coupon for stuff I know we don’t have or amounts we don’t use.
I may not know every sale but I DO know what coupons are given out and we keep track of competitors so don’t come in lying about a price of a Dyson vacuum cleaner from Wal-mart that was $20 or we sent out 50% off coupons in the mail. We are briefed every day on what the major sales, coupons and specials are.
7) I didn’t know the coupon expired!/Wasn’t effective yet! You have to give it to me, this isn’t fair!
We sympathize. If the coupon is less than a week old, chances are the manager will give the OK, but if the coupon is 3 months old with the date written under the title, that’s not our problem. People tend not to read the entire coupon. I’ve gotten yelled at because a coupon was rejected for being too old like it was my fault.
Coupons are encoded to be taken on certain dates, so if you come in a day early, it wont be taken. Even the managers cant change that.
8) I’m waiting for you!/Any words that makes someone feel threatened.
Stores have security at the touch of a button and I’ve never seen police take longer than 2 minutes to get to the store. Do you really want to get an assault or criminal charge on you and banned from the store because you couldn't’t save $5? I know times are tough but it’s not worth risking jail because you cant get what you want at a cheaper prince.
9) Get on line and talk throughout the transaction on your phone or someone else and ignoring the cashier.
Not only is it rude to me, you’re not paying attention to what’s going on and then you get made when there’s a "mistake"? I once had 2 ladies come up on my line and speak to each other the whole time and once I finished their transaction and told them the total, I get screamed at because they didn’t want something on their bill and threatened to complain. The lady behind me was shaking her head and telling me don’t get mad over it because it wasn’t my fault and it wasn’t. How was I supposed to know you don’t want something if you dump it all in front of me and don’t say anything?
10) Shop on the SALES FLOOR, not the cashier’s stand.
I can understand asking me to take off 1 or 2 items in a transaction but coming up with a cart full of clothes (sometimes MORE) and telling me to take off every other item and then you leave with one bag is very time consuming and holds up the line. When you come to the register, you should be finished with your items and ready to check out. What some people don’t know is we hold EVERY item we take back behind the register and at the end of the night, everything has to be put back. Imagine someone shopping in every department and doing what I just said with the items? Closing shouldn't’t take more than 15 minutes but sometimes we spend HOURS cleaning up customer throwbacks because people are unusually indecisive and it can spill into the next day if it's massive.
11) If you wont do it at home, DO NOT do it in the store!
I’ve seen GROWN people throw trash around, mess up clothing racks, watch their kids spill snacks on the floor and leave it or come into a fitting room full of clothes and leave it all in a pile with the hangers on the floor. We understand spills happen, so tell us so we can get it clean. There is NO excuse though for a person to throw stuff around and not care because it’s not theirs. And it’s NOT my job to clean filth believe it or not. My job is upkeep and maintenance, not picking up a pig pen.
12) People in retail are not rugs, so don’t try to walk over us.
I think customer service is basically dead. People think I’m suppose to bow down and bend over backwards to help them. Respect is a 2 way street. I especially hate when people don’t read their receipts or leaflets they get with items. I cant take a return that’s past the date, no exceptions. Last year we had one woman try to return a comforter she brought in 1990….not working. And we know what we sell so coming in with clothes and saying you forgot the receipt but want to get a return on something is wrong too. Even if we sell it and you have no proof of purchase, you wont get the ticketed price back. Like I said, each store is different but we do that also to deter theft.
13) Don’t ask us to babysit.
If anything happens while your kid(s) are being under my watch, the store and myself are liable. We’re not babysitters and we have a job to do. If you cant shop with your kids, get a sitter at home. I’m tired of being yelled at by mothers who get “offended” when I say I’m not allowed to watch their children.
14) Bathe or do your habits BEFORE shopping.
I’ve had to damage out clothes because they are emitting offensive body odor, cigarette/weed odors, perfumes or make up stains from people trying on clothes. I’m not trying to be a nag and tell people don’t smoke or wear make up or whatever but you don’t own the clothes are get ruined and it costs the store money and affects employee hours if sales aren’t up to a certain level. You may think how can one shirt affect that but this happens all day, everyday and it’s very costly in more ways than one. I'm not trying to offend people with #14 and I realize some people may not know this is an issue with them but I hope people think twice on this before trying on clothes.
What things happen to you in retail that you don’t like? What do salespeople do or say to you that you don’t like? (I’m being fair here, that’s why I asked both questions)..

I have no patience for people, after working in fast food.
Thank you for reminding me retail is not a place I belong as an employee.
uh i totally agree. though i never worked at retail, i worked at superstore & they have some of the worse customers because..
a) if the lines are longer than usual they yell at you for not opening more lanes and it's like: hello i cant do that, the managers do, and plus we have a schedule on when employees work and get off.
b) the phone one is absolutely correct. i had that 2x
c) when you get harassed by customers because you wont put in their damn expired, incorrect item- coupon.
d) getting mad at you because their credit card/ debit doenst work. it's not my fault that maybe you went over your limit on your credit card or you dont have enough in your debit card. thats your and the credit card's company. not mine.
e) when your items dont scan through properly and you're calling someone to get it fixed and they cant wait and scream at you because we work there and we should be able to fix it. we're not managers, we're just cashiers. we cant do everything we dont have all the rights.
f) especially when they tell you that you're not going fast enough. if im not fast enough, go to the next lane. im trying my best under pressure without making a mistake ==
g) when the scanner scaned an item wrong, and you cant "trust" that they wont lie to you, so you have to call your manager, ask for assistance, and the customers find out that they're right, after managers leave they bitch at you that they were right in the first place. "customers are always right." ==
those are just some of my problems while i worked at superstore :P i feel your sympathy! that's why when i go to retail/ supermarkets i understand their problem and wait patiently and not force the coupon through :)
@Shy___Away@xanga - Working in a restaurant wasnt too bad for me personally. I just hated when I as a hostess got yelled at for the food or if people were "eating too slow". I told a customer once that if she wanted something fast, McDonald's was down the block. But yes, retail as a whole can be a killer. Some people thing retail workers are their servants & try to treat them as such.
@kristentsuii@xanga - OMG YES!! I hate when credit cards dont work. I feel bad when things like that happen & I talk low to the customer so they wont be embarrassed & then they blow up at me asking why their shit doesnt work. I swear retail workers should be allowed to slap 5 people per shift before getting in trouble because some people really deserve to have sense knocked into them.
And I agree with the item scanning. I had a shirt not ring up & this man tried to tell me it was $23 when it was really $29 then I got a dirty look for calling the department for confirmation. I dont get why people who can afford things will try to steal. I wish we had stricter rules to ban people like that from the store because we get this all day, all the time!
@do_you_reallywannago@xanga - Thanks! I wish my store would amend their policy because people have been known to steal & bring things back for a "refund". I've seen clothes taken back that have be ripped, washed & smoked out. It's a damn shame.
When we opened last year, we had a line of returns on day one going around half the store. Ugh...
The absolute best (and most hilarious) blog on this subject: http://notalwaysright.com/
I worked in retail in HS and it wasn't so bad but there were a few things that annoyed me. Which is why I'm always patient with sales people. If you've worked there, you know how to treat other sales people.
I've worked at Safeway. I know it's not exactly retail but I totally understand where you're coming from.
lol I worked at Hollister and American Eagle. I actually never had many problems with customers, but had more of a problem with management :\
I worked at Mervyn's before the whole out of business mess and I experienced all of that but that was all part of the job. So......I couldn't really do much about it.
I've sometimes encountered problems with racist salespeople, or clerks who think they can get away with shoddier/dishonest service because the customer is non-white and/or doesn't speak English well.
As a customer, I will be polite and considerate as long as I feel the salesperson is doing the best he/she can, even if they are unable to help me (I recognize that there are limits to what you can do).
@WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga - That's not true. Just because things happen on the job doesnt mean it's acceptable & you shouldnt just take it. Any good manager will tell a customer something is not needed & ask them to leave or call authorities of their behavior becomes violent. Last year when had a mother & her vile child (I say vile because she was rude to us & locked all the fitting rooms!!) go off & we had one of the stock boys call a manager because we didnt want to escalate the situation & he told her to leave & we didnt need her money if she was going to treat us this way.
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - I hate idiots like that in retail. Just because a customer doesnt understand does not mean they deserve less respect. The town I'm in is often a popular spot with tourists but I dont assume they dont understand. I still say hello, goodbye, please & thank you.
In their ignornace, some salespeople will look at someone & assume they wont understand things & start speaking a foreign language & get the shock of their lives. I've seen it happen. We had a white woman complain to the managers when associates started saying things about her in plain sight because they assumed she wouldnt understand them & I swear they looked ready to piss their pants when the manager came over!! XD
Thanks, this was an informative post. We often hear about poor customer service, but rarely get the perspective of the hard pressed retail worker, who gets to see the ugly side of the "consumer" hour after dreary hour, and for a less than glamourous wage.
Good luck.
I should write one of these for fast food workers. Some of the concepts are the same, like people talking on their phones and getting pissed when something is "wrong" with their orders.
And dont' EVEN get me started on children, a lady is trying to sue the ChickFilA I work at because her child went face first down the slide and busted his face. That's not OUR problem. We're not babysitters!
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - I agree! I mean I know that the economy is low and you'd want to save as much as possible, but rules are still rules. The cashier would be under servailance if their till doesnt count up correctly! And if the customer does get caught, the cashier would be in trouble also because the managers would question and ask why they would let an item go off cheaper than it originates! Then all of your explainations wouldn't work because the managers would go you should of called for confirmation and blah blah :(
YESYESYES! on number three!
And to add to the list, "When I say we're out of a certain product, we're seriously out of it." I work at Bath and Body works and I have people complaining about not having something and then asking 3 other sales associates if we have it/ -__-'
It's also really annoying when people get mad at us for something the company does. Like when we discontinue certain scents, people yell at us like it was our fault. O_O OMG. I'M FREAKING SORRY.
great points
I agree with these, some customers can be annoying but so can some people who work in retail >.>
@tieduh@xanga - I seriously think that customers believe we can magically create the product or something...
I work at Delia's and our policy has always been great customer service. We have a whole handbook practically... So when customers are rude to me, it makes me feel like everything I work hard for is of no importance to them. The days when I get someone who is absolutely terrible, I literally think about quitting. I don't feel as if ANYone is nice anymore. It's rather terrible...
Great post.
omg thank you! thats how i felt when i worked in retail! I learned that people can be such snobby &^%$$s
This is why I've never had the guts to work in retail. I don't want to have to put up with people yelling at me for their own mistakes, and God knows that they would.
I found this only since I started working that the Mall of America (woo yay minnesota) but my biggest pet peeve is getting hit on or asked for my phone number at work. I once had to get my manger involved because I was so uncomfortable and he reminded them that it was sexual harassment and that he could press charges against them for harassing his employee.
Great post!
Absolutely. The store I work for right now is actually EXTREMELY lenient with returns, so people can wear shoes for a year (until they're beat up and gross) and bring them in, say, "They were the wrong size" and exchange them for a new pair. If they kept their receipt, they even get full price for the shoes. The company will basically do anything for customers, so people have figured that out and walk all over the associates who work there. I get sick of:
1) People complaining that we have to put security devices on merchandise to keep it from being stolen.
2) People who yell at me across the store instead of finding me (it's a very small store - I'm easy to find) and politely asking for help. Also, people who get to the register and yell across the store that they're ready (we don't have someone stationed at the register at all times where I work). Normally, I've SEEN them approach the register and I'm on my way there when I hear, "EXCUSE ME!" One day I had a woman yell, "Um, there's a lady who is ready to check out!" The lady who was "ready" to check out was still across the store from the register, shopping in the aisles.
3) People who pull me away from standing on a ladder and trying to pull down a stack of boxes so they can ask me if we have a shoe . . . especially when they were standing three feet from the shoe and there were six of that particular shoe on the shelf. Or people who want to know if we have more merchandise "in the back." This probably isn't helped by the corporate policy, which is to say, "Just a minute. Let me go check!" and then go into the back room, where there is NO merchandise being stored, wait an appropriate amount of time, and then come back out and tell the customer, "Oh, I'm sorry. We don't have that in the back either. How about this item instead?" Why lie to people?
4) People who insist an item is on sale because a $5 tag happened to be laying in the box they picked up. Then, when you explain to them that the tag has fallen in by mistake and that if it were on sale, it would be attached to the box, insist on getting it on sale anyway. And when you explain you can't mark the item down, they insist on speaking to your manager or district manager.
5) Customers who get their nose out of joint for various reasons and call the corporate office with a made up story to get you in trouble. Working at a shoe store, we're supposed to offer to measure children's feet if they're younger than 8 years old. I had a woman come in with her 16-year-old son once. After a bit, she had him ask to have his feet measured. Teenagers do this all the time to entertain themselves, so when he asked I responded, nicely, "Are you serious?" He said yes, so I said, "Oh, ok. Sure." and helped him measure his feet. The mother called the corporate office, told them a sales associate had refused to measure her "small child's foot" and had said, "You've got to be kidding me!" when the child requested it. Fortunately, the manager knows me well enough that she refused to write me up when she heard my side of the story. But that was NOT funny. I may not like my job much, but I really like that it pays the bills and I'd rather not get fired for a dumb reason.
Oh my God...a-'freakin-men.
