Groceries-We cant get everything you need in one store so as much as I dislike my local Walmart (the people there can be so rude & nasty) I go there to grocery shop when we need alot because the food is cheaper. Ohter little things we may get from publix, Target or bargain stores

Bathroom Supplies- We get these from like CVS or if the supermarket has good sales. the 99 cents & dollar stores are a good place to get laundry detergent, bar soaps, body washes & lotions too. As much as I love Victoria Secret & Bath & Body Works stuff, you have to adjust to the times & deal or wait until they have semi-annual sales at anytime like I do & buy it all in bulk quanities.

Airline Tickets-I dont travel much now & I'm scared to fly but when I have to, Jet Blue is pretty reasonable but lately airlines get on my nerves. Especially last year when thety RETROACTIVELY started charging for fuel. I found out when I was ringing up a big purchase & the customer's blackberry rang with an email notice from the airline & she told me. $20 may not seem like alot but I think it's crazy to tack that on after you paid months in advance. They should have set a date & said from that day on they would charge

Contact Lenses- I dont wear these but I have heard of companies that sell/take scripts for discounted prices. Or if you have good insurance, they dont charge alot

Restaurants-Lately I've been saving every coupon so I havent paid full price for a couple of places. Check your Sunday papers or get circulars. Lately (at least for me) the past few months, I've been seeing ALOT of coupons for places like Friendlys, Chili's, Denny's, Friday's & other nice sit down places. Atleast the ones that havent closed...They also mail an envelope full of coupons that have not only food but services too.

Flawed Merchandise-I get these from bargain stores too. I dont care if a button is irregular or what.

Cell Phones-My bill has been pretty steady, although they offered me a reduced bill if I lower my minutes because I havent talked much. That's partly due to me being sick & unable to speak but mom told me to leave it as is.

Magazines-Prices for some have gone down but I usually wait until the newer issue is out & get the old one cheaper. Or just subscribe & save like 60% or more.

Gas-This has been expensive for the longest but usually my mom gets gas by her job because it's cheaper. I notice if you live in a very populated area or the station is near a school, it's more expensive.

Appliances-My job sells applicanes so I get 15% off as an employee! I dont worry too much if I need a small appliance but lately we just got a fridge & stove in home renovation as part of a settlement & we got some good discounts off it from nice store workers & one idiot who botched our delivery & gave us back $125.

isn't gas one of those things you have to pay full price for?

  • s_h_a_sha@xanga

lol how do u not pay full for gas?

i do it for all the other stuff... :)
  • Manstration@xanga

Who pays pull price for magazines? Yeeesh.

  • k8tthelate@xanga

the only one I disagree with is groceries-I have found that even with good coupons, usually the generic or store brands are cheaper-even when the name brand is on sale and you have a coupon. Bread stores have good deals sometimes (you have to know your prices) and I have found wonderful deals on groceries from the .99 store.

Restaurant.com has some good deals, but it pays to check which local restaurants are participating before you fork out. In our area, there are only two-neither of which I am interested in. I do better with the sales ads in the Sunday paper.

how do you not pay the full price for gas..?

  • christinacanshimmy@xanga

maybe for the gas they mean getting it from places that have cards where you get 3 or 10 cents off a gallon, like Kroger's and Giant Eagle

  • xxthatsmexx@xanga

I'm assuming not paying full price for gas is like going to Costco with a business Cosco membership and getting 5% back?

For some reason, "never" makes it sound like it's such an easy rule by which to abide...except we all know it's not exactly possible at any given moment. Haha. I ran out of shampoo one day and we didn't see a sale on the brand we usually get for about...4-5 months? Possibly longer. So I went out and bought Pert Plus =D.

I've used hand-me-down (FREE) phones for the past five to six years and, upon finally deciding to get a new one, found the prices of the phones without getting a new contract or 2-year commitment to be obscenely expensive. Definitely hit up the internet to get out of paying full price on that one.

Groceries- I'm a coupon freak. I like to use them when the stuff is on sale or on clearance to save even more. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy the genaric brand than what you have a coupon for.

Bathroom Supplies- Just look for the best deals. Ask yourself if it is cheaper to buy the big rolls but with thinner sheets? Laundry detergent is mostly the same they all clean your clothes. I've found recipes to make your own detergent.

Airline Tickets- we don't fly anywhere cauz we don't have the cash to do much. Use AAA or travelocity.

Contact Lenses- Don't wear them so don't know much about them.

Restaurants- Use gift cards & reload them. Do the 2 for so much deal to save. You get 2 meals for 2 for mostly the cost of one. Go during discount days or hours.

Flawed Merchandise- Ask for a discount because of the flaw, they are usually good about it. You can fix it yourself or don't worry about it.

Cell Phones- We are with nextel & my bf dropped his phone in the fire & couldn't find it (finally found it a month later burnt up but the sim card was fine. LOL!) So when I called to shut it off they said we could upgrade to the next phone & we only had to pay to activate them. Sometimes when you are so far into your contract; if you don't have an outstanding bill or have never had them shut off you can usually get an upgrade or a discount on accessories or plans.

Magazines- I don't subscribe to them anymore cauz I don't have time to read them, mostly ads anyway. Most of them have a lot of the info on their websites so you can read it there. Or it will tell you what will be in the next issues & if I want to read something in that issue I will just go out & buy it.

Gas- Our gas company has a budget plan that they adjust twice a year. It goes by how much you are using and then you just pay a set amount every month. The downfall is when they adjust you have to bring up the difference left. Vehicle gas, most places are doing 3 cents off a gallon if you pay with cash. Reloadable gas cards are good if you don't have the cash. visit gasbuddy.com to check prices in your area

Appliances- Go to the scratch and dent stores they work just fine, use touch up paint on the scratches if it bothers you that much, most are hardly noticable. You can find them in the classifieds that people are selling for cheap too, sometimes at goodwill or stores where people have donated appliance or furnature. If shopping in stores tell them you can get it cheaper somewhere else and they usually come down in price cauz they want you to buy from them. Garage sales too.

Cell phone - My mom never pay full price or else I'll be in deep shit
Cell phone bill: $600 -- my mom somehow settle the dispute and paid $200

I don't understand how you do not pay full price for gas. Where the Hell is the discounted gasoline store? Let me know about it, ASAP.

  • defind@xanga

yeah how do i obtain these legendary discounts?

  • TiRocKiinPiinK@xanga

I pay full price for everything on this list at some point. Just because I can get it cheaper somewhere else doesn't mean it isn't full price.

  • haloed@xanga

I gotta say, there's a huge difference between cheap 1 ply toilet paper, and charmin.

And again, Herbal Essences is shit compared to my Aveda. I'd rather pay for quality.

  • x0__Ellie@xanga

i love this post! thankss :]

  • BarniganFlarn@xanga

Most of these are simple enough. Using coupons, waiting for sales or buying bulk can always reduce prices. You usually get a free cell phone or rebates when signing up for a new plan and you can always buy a next to new phone online for cheaper than the store's prices. WIth magazines, ordering a subscription is cheaper than buying from the store, and I take advantage of flawed merchandise all the time. If a shirt has a tiny tear or stain on it, they'll always take 10-15% off, even if you know the tear is easily sewable and the stain will come out in the wash. Even if you can find an error on the inside of the shirt or a button missing or ripped packaging or something. Never hurts to ask. I am really not sure what constitutes "full price" for gas when it is always changing, so not sure how to avoid that one.

  • EveryRoadisanOption@xanga

Gas is the only thing I pay full price for... Any more the dollar store in my area have almost a full grocery section. As for perishables, I buy from the cheapest places I can find.

You can get anything for cheap nowadays.
  • PrincessOfSeptember@xanga

How in the world do you not pay full price for gas? I would love to know!

  • barbaradesmond@xanga

Well I don't drive so that's one way not to pay for it at all. Supermarkets do have discounts for gas if you spend fifty bucks on your grocery bill. I don't have a cell phone either so I'm doing good. Books should be added to the list.

  • litoaznbabi501@xanga

i just bought two airplane tickets, how can i buy them not for full price? =(

  • tigerdauphin@xanga

Thank you so much for this list!

  • doraemonxo@xanga

it was a bitch trying to buy a restaurant franchise at a discount rate

  • Peasprout@xanga

So let's see, I can spend hours researching and driving all over to save a few coppers here and there, or I can pay full price and enjoy my life. Gosh, what to do? Seriously, who cares if you spend a little bit more here and there. Money is everywhere, time and happiness are not. Pay the extra $2, and then do something memorable with the 30 minutes you just bought yourself.
