  • Stuffing Your Life Savings In A Pillow

    Mr. Savings

When I was younger my parents had their own way of saving money, putting it in the pillow they slept on.

They were immigrant parents who didn’t quite understand the concept of a bank yet.  I never knew about their “secret” location until the day our apartment building caught on fire.

The first items my mom grabbed were the pillows.  I couldn’t figure out the life of me then why she grabbed the pillows.

It wasn’t until after we were safely out of the building, I realized all our important papers, passports and money were in there.

I asked her why she put it in the pillow.  She said it’s the easiest thing to grab when you have to get out quick, instead of searching through drawers and such.

Didn’t make much sense to me but it did for her and that was okay with me.

Since then my mom has changed her ways.  She no longer keeps her money in pillows or mattresses, like all those guys in the movies.

We get a good laugh out of it sometime when we talk about it but then it was the only way she knew how to protect all of our things.

Have you ever put your money in any place else besides the bank?  Where did you put it?

Whoa! That's so interesting! I remember my grandma had this box she kept on an high shelf with all her cash. She didn't know how to drive so she refused to put the money in the bank.

hahah i have an "english dictionary" which is actually a safe... but last nite i just invested in my own small safe... but most of my REALLY important documents (that rarely needed) are in my safety deposit box @ the bank lol

Piggy banks. My brother used to sew his valuables into his raggedy jeans...which was fairly smart, since it's harder to find if someone breaks in, and if you're already wearing your stuff in a fire -- handy.

Out here, people with land wil pick a random spot on their so many acres and buy their valuables. No one knows your land better than you, right?

My Mom's had firesafes...although our housefires had sortof melted and super heated the safes, though damaged...the stuff was still in there when we went through the ashes.

I think that's actually a good idea! I use the bank, though.

That is a good idea. Except times have changed. I remember being able to walk down to the candy store. Now I can't even imagine my girls walking down to the corner store to buy a snack. No No No.

However I can see putting all of my important docs into a pillow case. I often think about the "what if" scenarios and have recently gathered all my important docs into a manila envelope. I don't know about money though. I swear is there really a safe place to tuck away those hard earned ca$h...

It worked for her!  Everything was safe from that fire!!

It is a good idea to have important things together and easy to grab.  But you also need to protect yourself against thieves.  It is a hard balance.

I like having randomized places to put pockets of emergency money, but I always end up taking the money right out from where I hid it and spend it within a week.  It's a great concept even though it never works for me.

Since a little more than half my earnings comes in the form of tips, I have to put that cash someplace until I can either spend it on bills/other needs or move it. Because I'm a bartender, we have all these cool boxes and other containers that come in for the new bottles of stuff and myself and a few other co-workers take home these big yellow tins for Barenjager liqueur (kind of like Jagermeister but it tastes like honey). It's a wicked awesome tin and it gets the job done :)

My grandmother kept her money in a baby sock pinned inside her bra.
