My Top 5 Complaints About Public Transportation
As a person with pretty much nonexistent income, I've come to rely on the bus as my main mode of transportation. A car comes with way too many expenses and the metro has just jacked up its prices.
Walking can only get me so far. Unfortunately, the horse and carriage days have come to past by a century, give or take.
I'm not going to lie --I enjoy transit bus rides for the mere fact that I can listen to my favorite iPod playlists and look out the window. Also, not driving and enjoying a semi-nap is quite pleasant too.
HOWEVER, there are some aspects of public transportation that are absolutely terrible (and no the bus drivers are not one of them because surprisingly they are always chipper and understanding):
1. People who insist on sitting plump next to you despite a bus full of empty seats. I swear there have been many instances in which there were only four or five people on the bus and someone (usually a creepy man) STILL sat next to me, wiggling his bum closer and closer.
2. The lines. Commuting home is a nightmare. Whenever I see the line form various loops throughout Port Authority I seriously want to cry because it means my evening has just been wasted. The feeling only amplifies the more often people incredulously ask "what bus are waiting for?" and a look of horror settles upon their faces when you inform them "same as you buddy." I don't know which is worse though ---searching for much needed patience in a long line in the evening or waited for a late bus in a frozen windshield sort of morning.
3. Dirty windows. I'm no germ-free primadonna --I overlook the gum wrappers stuffed between the seats and the passengers who forget to cover their mouths when sneezing. Still, I do appreciate some hint of cleanliness, and shiny, bright windows are one of them. Bus companies need to understand once and for all that clear windows only reflect so much more positively back on them.
4. People who whip out their blackberries or iPhones and proceed to make their personal business known to the rest of the passengers. I don't care that your best friend's brother's girlfriend has an STD or that you're following a new 300 calorie diet. I just want to close my eyes and pretend I'm far away from the overly stuffed bus. Shut your mouth and sit down. Pop in a breath mint or something.
5. Overcrowded rides. Every five minutes the bus lurches to a stop and more and more passengers squeeze onboard. Not only do the rides become more cringe worthy when you realize that the person looming over you forgot to apply anti-perspirant or that the woman next to you devoured fish for breakfast, but when the bus pulls into its main stop, people will do anything to be the first one off that bus. They literally shove you, don't let you pass through, and all sense of decent courtesy is shot dry. So why the overcrowded bus rides, ye companies? You'd think that concerns over safety would force these companies to issue some maximum capacity rule but noooo...where there's money to be made what's an injury or two?
Are you reliant on public transportation? Do you prefer it or do you have some serious gripes with it as well? What are your top pet peeves about riding trains/buses/shuttles?

Where I'm from in VT the closest thing to public transportation is the VT Ride Share Board, where people sign up to carpool together. After having no option for public transportation I've gotten very used to having my own personal transportation. I don't think I could ever move to a city, just because I don't think I could handle the public transportation aspect. I did spend a summer in San Francisco, but I just walked everywhere, cuz BART was always so crowded.
We get to ride the bus free when on campus. I hate the loud, obnoxious girls who use the word 'like' every five seconds. Also, the obnoxious frat boys. I swear when people get into groups, they get 50x more annoying.
I am way too scared to take public transportation (in LA). Part of that is because there are often very sketchy people on the buses, and the other part is that I get lost very easily, and I worry about missing my stop and getting stranded in a bad area.
You forgot to mention the pervs who try to subtly rub against you. Ugh!
how are you??
the people with no manners. like the people who don't move out of their seats for elderly and pregnant women. i always move but it makes me SO angry when males don't move. i thought it was manlaw but i guess it dosen't apply to some... haha : )
I absolutely LOOOOVEE driving, especially in my own little car. :) To me, the only downfall in driving is that I have to pay for gas. :( At least it's a LOT cheaper than what it was last year!
I always despise those little old ladies who feel their way is the best way and must loudly voice this opinion. That, or when I'm walking down the street and two buses pass me in 5 minutes but I can sit at the stop for over half an hour and not see one bus.
people who take up more than once seat.
usually I dun sit at all on a bus, even if there are seats open because honestly it's easier to stand, especially if I know the bus will get crowded and it'll be a hassle to push through ppl to get through the door.
but people that have their leg up on one seat and is sitting on another just piss me off.
Yea... public transportation is the WORST on rainy days.
haha yea and thats just with the buses. Don't get us started on the subway- there's plenty that can go on the list of why we hate the MTA. But yea, it keeps getting worse and the prices are going up way too high. I'm thinking of investing in a bike and a very warm jacket.
@youngvan@xanga - agree
The smell of wet socks on the bus is just DISGUSTING
I usually catch the bus or I walk. :P This is what I hate about buses...
1. I HATE BUS DRIVERS.
They are so f**ken rude to school students and yet they complain that we're rude. They need to give us respect as well. They have no manners.
2. People who takes up more than one seat.
3. I hate when bus drives ignores you when you try to flag them down. *shakes fist*
4. When people sit besides you, they cough and sneeze. Argh. This makes me really paranoid because they don't cover their mouth.
5. When people doesn't stand up for the elderly or pregnant women.
6. I hate when people put their legs on the seats when all the other seats are full. I want to break their legs.
7. When the bus is dirty and they have rubbish everywhere. Gross!
8. When people talk really loud on their mobile phones.
End of rants. :D
i once had a very very fat slightly drunk Carib lady who was wearing really high heels FALL ON MY LAP while on the bus in NYC ::shudder:: i thought i was going to be crushed beyond recognition T_T
i don't think i've taken a bus (other then around my old university) since then. i take the subway, the train, drive, or walk a thousand miles to avoid the bus.
Public is the greatest because it's better for the population over all. I used to love taking buses and trains when I lived in Portland, and I squirm around and cry myself to sleep every night over the last 4 years since I had to leave their great public system behind.
I live and go to school in Chicago so I take the EL and the CTA as much as possible
I have a list of complaints with the public service from prickish drivers to unneeded price hikes. The local transit service is a little bit loopy.
this usually happens on Thursdays on the bus that i take probably because people get out of work around the same time and it just so happens that they take the same bus.
I absolutely despise using the bus and avoid it at all cost.
And to the people that say they're annoyed with people who take up more than one seat, you could just politely ask to sit in that seat if all the other seats are full you know... well, unless they're really fat.
It doesn't make sense to stand there and be angry at someone because they're leg or w/e is in the way. You did pay for the seat.
I'm jealous because I always wished there was reliable public transportation in my home city. I've always had to drive, and now I'm at the point where you could give me whatever car of my dreams, and I would STILL hate driving it.
There's no type public transportation where I live. Would be nice to have the option though.
I HATE public transportation. new york city MTA schedules should have the word "suggested" on them.
you also didn't mention how some buses decide not to come when they're supposed to [b4..grrr!]. and how some people take up 2 seats on a crowded bus. Then you have the stupid high school kids...UGH. frustration!
subway isn't much better. And the MTA is infuriating with these fare increases. The last time they screamed deficit, they found a hidden surplus AFTER the fare hike. I wish that guy had managed to throw his Nike at the head of MTA....*sigh*
awesome post!
at least you don't live in thailand.
I feel your pain. Being fifteen and not making much money doesn't put me anywhere near a car of my own. I frequently rely on the MBTA in MA and quite frankly I hate it. The overcrowded-ness is probably the worst. Especially in inclement weather, everything gets all muddy or wet and its just not pleasant.
I remember when I used to have to ride public transportation (now with two kids, it's just not feasible). I can definitely commiserate with you on all of these points!
