Guest blog by JueJeeI made my homemade laundry soap and let it set for the 24 hour waiting period. It is goopy. I didn't add any oils to it for smell. It doesn't smell bad at all.
Here is what it looks like:
Here is hubby's shirt BEFORE:
Up close (below) on the stain which is more than likely some type of oil from the chain saws he uses.
I did NOT pre-treat at all.
Here are the results. I was VERY surprised!
There is only a light stain left. This is awesome for a shirt he wore to work. It is very difficult to get these oil stains out of his shirts. I am sure if I had pretreated, it would have come out but this was my test...
Cost breakdown to make the soap. .51 cents for 2 gallons! about a tenth of a penny per load! Big difference from Tide which is usually around .33 cents a load or more.
The recipe for the soap I made can be found
here. Now that you have a recipe, are you inclined to make your own detergent? Why or why not?

I might. I need some! I've been looking for a good one too!
I already do, I love how fresh my clothes feel. That difference alone is worth it, not to mention it is WAY cheaper and better for the environment (and your health!).
I so am. Does it smell nice?
Oh, borax is in it. That stuff is amazing. Thus your awesome results.
I married into a mennonite family and finally got the recipe a few years ago. I do not use the recipe listed tho and mine is dry. it uses a little over a tablespoon for a full load. It has always done a good job, but I do have to keep in mind it is a soap, not a detergent (that makes a different chemical reaction) and shouldn't be used on flame retardant material. I love the way the clothes soften after I've used it a few times-esp on my sheets and towels!
I would still use Tide. Once you figure in how much money you would earn in the time from making the other detergent it's worth it just to buy the better product.
I might try it.. I like trying new things. Lol
How do you do this?
There are brands half the cost of Tide or less with fewer harmful additives.
@you_were_the_song_all_along@xanga - Just to let you know I should have mentioned in my post... it only takes about 10 minutes to make the soap from start to finish and it isn't a big messy thing to make.
@Alex_Horschack@xanga - the link in the post gives you step by step directions to make the soap. It's quick and easy and it smells great.
Hmmm, I don't know about Homemade detergent... but I do love saving money.

I have a friend who recently did this (except she made the dry mix). She claimed it worked pretty well, and with buying only $25 of ingredients she probably has enough to last her for a few years (and that's something for somebody who has four kids, so she normally spends that much every month on regular detergent).
I might have to try it. I wonder if my husband would be up for it since he usually does the laundry!
That seems like a good way to save money. Didn't think of that. I don't know why not. Back in the 1800 sand before, people on the frontier did things of that nature.
